Sanding old wood beam but stripey from laths?

Old wood beam in the loft room has been uncovered and it had all the old lath and plaster taken off.
We've been sanding it with 40 grit on a belt sander but so far, we can't get the streaky bands out of it where some of the laths used to be.
Any ideas? Why would this be discoloured and how far into the wood would it go?

Try a disc sander with a soft pad on an angle grinder.

Hi Daisy!

I don't think it's the sander causing it to happen as its where the laths were places that are lighter.

Just out of interest, how would a disc sander get rid of the lines? Is it going deeper? 😊

Ps I need to get myself another detail sander as can't get to some of the edges of the beam. Any suggestions for a good one?? Mine all break 🤣

Update on this (June 2015): Yup, those ceilings have not changed one bit!!! I finally manned (womanned?) up and broke out some Annie Sloan chalk paint last night and tested a corner of my office (pics to follow). Dear Husband and I have not swatted each other with much of anything related to this roof or the walls. We have however assembled quite a lot of flat pack furniture and hold a MOUNTAIN of moving rubbish to the tip at this point. 1. If going for the flat/professional look, I fail as a painter, caulker, sander, and...yeah. The job would require what my painter quoted me (to the tune of 6,000+ USD). Total sanding, caulking of all joints (note the hundreds of them....), shellacking and individual knot treatment, 2 coats of paint, coat of sealant....let's just say a car would cost less. I tried - knots bled through. So chalk paint is out but important lesson learned with little pain/cost. 2. I am going to try out a few more techniques on a tiny, small corner of my office. Whitewashing with 2 types of paint, trying to locate some milk paint and gel stain. Not keen on the liming wax. Husband is still convinced we can do this ourselves. We fixed some of the wiring in the downstairs - it's still mentioned at all cocktail parties with photos. 3. We found a builder! We found a builder who talks more than I do and takes QUITE A WHILE to arrive at a conclusion. My back-up is to plaster between the beams and stain the exposed bits. But not ideal. My back-up back-up plan is to get pregnant quickly and thus remove one of our 'painters', necessitating hiring of (qualified) replacements! Back-up to THAT back-up is run away from home...(yes, you do feel like you are sleeping in an orange pine coffin if I'm honest) 4. Still no closer to making this place look decent but lots more ideas! Next on list...find someone to make a headboard to mount to wall Swiss German translation - Ich verstehe nur Bahnhof! Very belated feedback on this and a thank you for all the advice. After months of just not being sure what colour to go for, I decided just to go for it and ordered one from made.com which arrived today. It was advertised as grey but actually has a teal-ish tone to it. It's not right next to the wallpaper so I think it's okay. (Looks darker in the second photo as it was about to pour with rain!)

It sounds like you've got a few great ideas covered already :) Maybe also look at the materials used ie lime plaster, hardwood, chalky paint finishes etc. Choose door furniture, lights and sockets that are appropriate. Would beams suit the style of architecture? Look at deep doors rather than modern ones. I think the interior style will also be important to add character, lots of rugs, art, books etc, maybe mix in a few antiques with new furniture. Lots of texture for cushions, throws etc with traditional window dressings and choose the colour palette based on the scenery? A traditional shaker style kitchen with a natural stone worktop, butlers sink etc . What are the style of windows? Sounds like a fantastic house btw :)

Hi Tani, I know this is a bit late and you may have resolved the issue, but I showed your pictures to my plasterer stepson and said that when the original plaster is added to the wooden laths it is pressed amongst the wood so the plaster mushrooms out the other side, thus holding the plaster onto the wood. He said if it was his wall he would patch the areas without plaster with Hardwall, a sandy backing plaster, pushing it through the wooden lathes letting it mushroom out. Let it dry hard, then finish with a top coat of Multifinish. He did say he would come round and have a look, but I do remember you are oop north? I must say I rather like your idea of panelling but of course that is a bit more work.

A disc sander will go deeper.

Look for a multi tool with a triangular sanding pad on it. Decent brands are Makita or Bosch.
