A combination of lamps and pendant lights. Overhead lighting is often just the obvious option. There are many more possibilities now. I like the idea of a portable white glass dome battery powered. It looks great anywhere. The new led tubes bent into interesting shapes are like having a glowing circle suspended over your head. I'm not the biggest fan of wall lights as they are really tied to your interior taste. When you sell your house you cannot take them with you unless you replace them with something cheaper. I left a double arm Jielde wall light once and I'm pretty sure it ended up in a skip. Never again.

I have an undeniable soft spot for lamps, due to their versatility. They can be moved around easily to change the ambiance of the room depending upon my mood. Lamps, especially those with dimmable bulbs, offer the flexibility to control the intensity of light which makes them perfect for curling up with a book in the evening, or for creating a sociable feel when entertaining guests in the living room.

I have both including a stunning floor lamp that I wouldn't be without. It gives the whole room a soft glow from a dark corner and I have it on all day. The table lamps and lanterns, together with candles in the evening, make the room a wonderful space for relaxing. The lanterns by the fireside are surprisingly effective - a string of fairy lights wound around a silver birch log and placed inside a lantern. I've added moss, beads and some woodland creatures in one of them - quite magical! BTW I covered the lampshades too!

As someone who taught Textile design on a degree course (before retirement) and prior to that worked in a famous national gallery, I have extremely eclectic taste. I have work painted by myself, work collected from other artists, limited edition prints, framed ephemera, and even two very large antique Victorian watercolors in gold frames - which I wouldn't probably buy these day, but do provide a bit of "weight" and gravitas in rooms. I like to put them against ultra modern lighting and pieces of furniture to give a bit of edge and conversely, put modern art against a couple of pieces of antique furniture we have.

Eye catching lighting can really transform a room and create an elevated statement. These work well above dining tables as highlighted by Rocco Borghese, where they can become great conversation starters! Accent lighting is fab for illuminating dark crevices or help you see into the back of shelves which is very handy. It is a very transitional, discrete type of lighting compared to a big statement that may become outdated. Ultimately, it is up to the homeowners needs and desires!

The lighting should be designed for the user, the space and the intended use of that space.

There is no "cover all" option as every user is different with different needs and every space is different with different uses, finishes, levels of natural light etc.

We try to avoid downlights as much as possible in a home environment as most of the tasks are to chill and rejuvenate and rest after a hard days work, heavy task areas are predominantly bathrooms, kitchens and home offices etc where downlighting is more appropriate. a variety of light types and sources on different circuits allow us to create layers of light and hierarchy which allows us to tune the lighting to the required task or operation of the space.
