what gravel is used here?

Can you please share details of the gravel. Can’t tell if it is bound or not.

Hi Steven, this surface is what we call Hoggin. We have used Raisby Golden Gravel from Imag, it is a self binding gravel. Thanks, BW

Thanks everybody. Really helpful advice and links. I think I will dig and plant in rather than trying pots. I previous didn't as around the house there is a good 20cm of concrete that meets the gravel. Hopefully this won't be much of an issue as it will grow over it as such. Perhaps some shrubs and different height plants in front of the house, and some other planting in front of the porch? I haven't thought of what in front of the porch yet. I will look into putting small hedging in front of the gravel. Fingers crossed that will bring it more to life than it looks at present!

Hi Sven. They look nice in glossy photos but they always seem to be taken when the lawn has just been laid:-). In reality I personally think grass between paving is a pain! I have inherited some round stepping stones leading to the old shed and whilst I can run the mower over them keeping the edges neat can take ages. Unless you’re very fastidious with a lawn edge trimmer I wouldn’t bother. There are alternatives tho, plants that don’t need mowing such as Irish moss, chamomile, thyme, sedum etc. a few can deal with heavy foot traffic as well. If budget allows, I would remove the gravel and pave the area either with sandstone for a rustic look, or outdoor grade porcelain for a modern look. Leave a clear area all round for planting pockets. Then you can string or hang outdoor solar lights to create some prettiness. You can dress a courtyard garden with outdoor mirrors or art too. Depending on your tastes, modern or cottagey, plant some bamboo, Trachelospernum star jasmine or Clematis on the walls (they will need tying in) on the sunny side. Roses love sunshine too. Fatsia japonica is a great exotic looking evergreen shrub that is very easy to grow. On the shady side try Japanese maples, ferns and anemones. You can have some pots grouped together of, say, summer geraniums which are so easy to grow and will flower all summer long. Buy the biggest pots you can afford as they won’t dry out so quickly so easier to maintain. Then finish with either a nice outdoor sofa or a table and chairs. A small water feature is always nice if you like the sound of water. www.primrose.co.uk sell loads. They usually come with a pump and a very long lead (32 feet) so you can plug it in.
