Climate control glass roof

Hi,

Has anyone tried climate control glass in the roof of their south-facing sun room/conservatory? Does it work?

Our space is unbearably hot in the summer - practically unlivable (the kitchen opens out into the sun room, so staying out of it on hot days isn't an option), so looking into options.

Do you have blinds or any sort of window covering? I don'tknow about the glass but you can get conservatory roof blinds which seem to be quite effective.

We had our polycarbonate roof changed to solar control glass a few years ago. Has a very slight blue tint but you can’t really see it against the sky. It is, without doubt, much better than it was. However, temperatures are still high and sometimes uncomfortable to be in but on those days we close it off to the house. Don’t expect it to take all your problems away even though it is better.

Thanks Jonathan, but horizontal wires or bars (other than a hand rail at the top) are not acceptable to Building Control as they consider that children could easily climb up them. For wire mesh to be acceptable the apertures would need to be sufficiently small that a child's foot could not fit in.

We are building a similar design extension and are south facing. We did make some design changes after last year’s super hot summer. Here’s what we have done to hopefully avoid cooking in future: - solar control glass - made sure there are at least two opening bits of glass, including one in the ceiling of the extension to allow hot air out - Ideally you also want something openable at both front and back of the house (and obviously doors open in between) to allow a through draught. We just about have this though not as good as I’d like. - we are also providing wiring so we can install two awnings, one over the back sliding doors and possibly one over the largest (very large) skylight. May be overkill and we may not need the skylight one but good to have the option. The back door awning also provides privacy and shade for the outdoor dining table. As an alternative to awnings you could use internal blinds for your doors and/or skylights.

Did you go ahead with this work and what glass did you go with? having work done to create a playroom in a north facing garden too. going with a combination of tiled and glass roof, just need to decide on which kind of glass ? blue for better temperature control or neutral.

Building a small extension and installed a roof lantern in it, a few months ago. It is a lovely addition, lots of light and looks really great. However, in recent very hot weather, it made the extension too hot for comfort. We can access the roof easily, so put a dark tarpaulin over the glass, weighing it down with big stones. This works well, provided there is no breeze! We really can't afford to install an expensive remote-controlled blind system right now, but thought that someone, somewhere, has probably produced fitted covers which can be put on and taken off easily, and could be fixed down fairly well. Can't find any such products online, however - does anyone have any suggestions about this, please?

Have you considered blinds for climate control? Tensioned pleated blinds are worth looking at for roof windows.
