Back Fence Ideas
Hi, so i have got my garden this far and want to know if anyone has any ideas for my back fence? it looks very bland and basic. The walls on the left hand side of the photo have now all been painted and look a little different.
A few ideas i thought of for the back fence are
- planting evergreen trees every 4m (every other post)
- place some pots with shrubs in front of the fence
-growing a crawling plant like virginia creeper over the whole fence (could be difficult)
- planting some pleached trees to screen off the neighbours.
ANY ideas that you think of will be greatly appreciated.

ideas for the fence line backing on to scrub/woodland
Comments (0)I have an 60 ft chain link fence backing onto a wooded bank with the railway line at the top. Every spring I clear the ivy and brambles that grow through. I want to retain the idea of looking through the fence ( you can barely see it so the garden seems to extend) rather than enclosing with fence panels. I am looking for some idea for planting /structures to put along the fence to hold back the undergrowth from the other side. Comments (8)Japanese Maples are just beautiful and they are woodland plants so love dappled shade. There are many varieties so check future height before purchase. They hate hot sun and wind. I also second Photinia. It’s an evergreen plant that has beautiful red leaves at the tips. I see it growing everywhere! Another good one is evergreen Fatsia Japonica which has huge palmate leaves. It can get pretty big so may need some judicious pruning at times. Camellias and Rhondodendrons are also very pretty and love woodland conditions. They need acid soil so buy Ericaceous compost for them. If you use ordinary compost the leaves turn yellow and sickly. Here’s a few pictures. Comments (43)Hi, the slabs were Natural Paving products. Premierstone Platinum. size: 900 x 600. They look brilliant, people love them, they are easy to sweep. However, they are a deathtrap! Kids in socks skid over on it and if there is the slightest bit of water it's like an ice rink, especially the steps! Am going to paint it with a non slip coating in the hope this solves the problem. You also need to make sure they are bedded on a solid base of mortar, rather than blobs, as the blobs wick up the moisture and you can see this on the top of the slab. Saying that, I do have a French drain under the patio, so there's a lot of moisture there. I only got round to painting the fence this weekend (Rubbish I know!) Started out the front and will work my way round the back as each panel needs adjusting as it's sagged. Oped for Cuprinol Silver Copse in the end. Comments (5)You could look at picket fencing. That’s what we’ve done at the end of our garden to retain the view of the field beyond. I’ve taken a screen shot of ours from a video to give you an idea. It’s not long been in and I don’t seem to have any photos showing how one can see through it. We’re really pleased with it. Virburnum tinus - evergreen shrub with white flowers in winter/spring
There is a great Story on Houzz by Patricia Tyrrell called something like 10 trees suitable for a small garden which may help. It’s just that a lot of trees grow enormous with time and can engulf a garden. I’ve noticed one of your neighbours has already put one in. There aren’t many evergreen trees unless you go down the conifer route which can be a minefield! There are many shrubs that grow to 8-10 feet which may suit your garden. The RHS (Royal Horticultural Society) have a great website where you can search for Tall Evergreen Shubs, for example. They also tell you how easy, or not, they are to grow. I see a lot of pleached trees on Houzz etc, but I’ve read they do need shaping and training to keep them in check, so do need maintenance,

Ceanothus - evergreen with blue flowers in May
Mahonia - evergreen with fragrant yellow flowers in spring
Mallow - evergreenish with pink flowers in summer
