How do I make this look better?
Comments (44)For a quick, easy and cheap facelift you'll be amazed how far a clean-up alone will go. Jet wash the wall and the driveway setts. Put a lick of paint on the ironwork, black would definitely be good. Brush in fresh kiln-dried sand between the setts. Prune back those sad looking shrubs before they get back into growth, which will be any time now. Don't cut back those firs, they will not grow back and are likely to just die. If you do anything at all with them, get rid and plant something which grows more happily in this country. It's a low definition photo so I can't see the state of the lawn or whether the wall needs re-pointing. Look yourself and treat accordingly. That alone will lift the place sufficiently to give you breathing space. Then you can think through what budget you have left and which of the many ideas available you prefer and can prioritise accordingly. On the other hand, whatever you do will not look good while all that looks scruffy and unloved....See MoreKitchen help - what can we do to make it look better?
Comments (65)Depending on how far you budget goes, I would look at adding traditional cornice and pelmet and replacing the plinth with a similar oyster colour. End panels for wall units could also be replaced / added. Some chessboard style tilling in 3 colours would also bring out the walls. It's hard to tell but is the oak surround also on the wall units? I haven't checked your location but this is something we can help with...See MoreHow do I make this large kitchen homely?
Comments (26)Hi - how I envy you that big kitchen; mine is tiny. I went for a warm cream with a splashback in bright red. You could perhaps add bright red accessories? I would go for a slightly darker, warmer shade of the walls, I would put large, bright ornaments on top of the cupboards (I particularly like hens and roosters) - they do need to be big though, otherwise they'll get lost. I'm sure you're going to have a table and chairs; my choice would be light wood, round, and maybe brightly coloured chairs to contrast the black tiles. Or, you go opt for a corner seating arrangement with comfy upholstered seating and bright cushions. Plants are an absolute must for me and that corner, to the left of the door, is crying out for a beautiful palm.....that is, if you don't opt for the corner seating! I would then place my plant(s) at, or near, the end of your counter. There are some very realistic "fake" candles around now - I have two which I've put into Moroccan style lamps which are only about 10 - 12" high. One sits of the floor, the other on a small table; they're pretty through the day and at night they flicker and cast patterns on the walls. I wish you well with whatever your choices - have fun and play around with it....See MoreHow can I make my living room look less cluttered?
Comments (16)Liking the eclectic look! You do have a fair amount of furniture in the space, but I think with the look you’re going for it can work well, its just learning how to work with it. I don’t think it looks cluttered at all. At present, besides the furniture, the room is fairly simple and so your eyes are mostly drawn to all the furniture. I’m thinking if you add in some accessories here and there, it will help to create interest and change the focus. It’s a great way to tie everything in together without using an area rug. For example, adding some feature wall art above the sofa, whether that be one stand alone piece or a cluster of a few. Or how about adding a nice red throw over the sofa to tie in with the red chair? Adding plants/flowers on top of furniture are always great options as others have suggested. Your oval footstool is a lovely piece. Maybe you could add a tray on it with some accessories on? In terms of creating more storage, maybe you could have a think about open shelves and find some interesting ways to display your items. But the bookcase is lovely too! I suppose it really depends how much storage you need. They’re just some initial thoughts. I won’t be offended if you don’t like!...See Morepatricianoodles
