I am taking the plunge....but how many walls?!

HI, I am looking for some advice please.. I have decided after much deliberation to paint my lounge a dark blue (probably little Greene Hicks Blue or F&B Stiffkey blue). My dilemma is - how many walls? I am torn between just 1 accent wall behind the brown sofa (we have no distinguishing features on any walls) or to paint that same wall AND the small wall immediately on the right (ie the 2 walls that meet behind the tripod lamp.

I will be putting a large antique brass mirror or some large prints on the wall behind the brown sofa to break up the dark blue on the wall , which I think will look striking.

Any suggestions gratefully received !

Since you're brave enough to go for the blue do all the walls. Room looks big and bright so I think it would be lovely.

We took down a load bearing wall. We contacted a local structural engineering practice, they drew up the plan and did all the calculations. They also recommended some local builders on our request. Then you notify the building control at your local council before work begins, they inspect during the job (for a fee) and they have to sign it off. Building control were pretty relaxed about it because we'd employed a structural engineer to do the calculations, some people just rely on their builder to work it out, not something I would do! It cost something like £300 for the plans and calculations and similar amount for building control inspection - suppose it depends where you live though as to costs.

I'm in my mid-thirties and on house 25! My partner is a few years older, and on his third. Everyone's experience is different! For me, it has to be my current house. It's smaller than every one of my previous homes, was a total wreck when I bought it, has no parking, drained my life savings, had mice, still has a to do list as long as your arm, and has been a massive pain in the b*tt. HOWEVER: it is the house my partner and I have been doing up together, and through which we bonded and got to know each other's strengths and weaknesses. It is the house where I learned to trust my own taste and honed my bargain hunting skills. It is the first place I lived in all by myself, and bought on my own, and it is where I finally learnt to be myself, be confident in myself and not worry about what other people think. It might not be perfect, it might be teenytiny, but House No.25 is my first real Home.

Hey thanks for the feedback - the extractor is above the hob yes - its funny - after I took that pic I did go and check myself! It looks OK in real life too :) Thanks for the idea, I was thinking the same too. Yes the alarm sensor is moving across the room at some point. OnePlan- are you also suggesting we should place everything to the right, or keep the left one as-is? That beam actually ended up lower than we were expecting as we found out the ceiling above is partially made of concrete and was resting on the old wall that was there! Turned into a lot more work than was expected for the structural team! Thanks

Different architects will take different lengths of time, but given that you’ve now waited for much longer than they originally indicated, it’s perfectly reasonable for you to chase them up, saying pretty much what you’ve said here, and asking for a clear timeframe for the revised designs. Keep a note of the dates on which each communication happens.

Thank you for the comments. The rug is from Achica (hotel living). Was excellent value around £100 and I am really happy with it. Once I have some curtains and pictures etc, I think it will all come together

I painted the kitchen in my old house a really dark blue all over. It looked like the tardis, so I had to re-paint!!!
I would do one ( behind your gorgeous sofa.) and reflect from there? Good luck, do let us know what you decide.

Hello Dawn,

Well I think you should consider all walls or team it with wallpaper for a dramatic look. I would also look at the flooring.. Dark floorboards or dark carpet would also enhance the rug..

Dark walls will definitely make the tan sofa stand out and then consider other warm pieces such as warm woods and or other tan. Some small additions of brass or gold will be nice too.. :))

I think I'd go for just the back wall behind the Chesterfield sofa. This compromise would allow light to continue to be reflected into the room but the dark blue would give an illusion of depth. You have few warm colours in there so perhaps a piece of art with warm colours on that blue wall might be nice.

I have Stiffkey Blue in my kitchen / diner, see photos below. (Taken just now so it's dark outside) I really like it because it works well with warm colours and grey. I also like it because it is definitely dark blue, not blue/black, but that's just my preference. I think either one wall or all four walls will make more impact.

Like others have said, I personally would paint all four walls the dark blue (if the room is as light and bright as it looks in the photo). It does seem counter-intuitive to paint a bright room a dark colour, but if the quality of light is good, using a dark colour can really highlight that quality. And the lovely thing about the dark F&B paints, in my experience, is the way they look different at different times of day. I think the combination of dark blue-grey-tan is lovely, and a large mirror against a dark blue wall would look fantastic. If you decided that the room wasn't well-lit enough for all dark blue, I would go for just one wall - two walls one colour and the other two walls another colour might look like you just couldn't make up your mind. And by the way, I really like the way you've mismatched your sofas - not always an easy thing to get right!

I would start by painting the TV wall dark blue, then it would blend more into the background. See how it looks and take it from there.

Hi, a mixed bag here!
I would start with the back wall behind the chesterfield adding some depth but keeping the length to the space. Enhance this with the brace mirror which will reflect the opposite window and give plenty of light. I am sure you will be happy stopping there but if not.. I think you're best braving it and doing all walls. Two never quite looks right so be brave and make it stunning. (If the one wall isn't enough). Great space. Well done.
