POLL: En suite bathroom - yay or nay?

Convenience can be critical and key, and having an en suite bathroom certainly ticks that box! But whilst some people like having their bathroom close by, some prefer to have an element of separation from the toilet.

A bathroom should be a sanctuary for personal private time and taking care of "business". The recent trend to make bathrooms an open plan feature of a master bedroom borders on the ridiculous and impractical. Similarly bathrooms with spectacular views destroy privacy. The last thing I want is someone peering in at me when I'm at my most vulnerable.

I agree with Rennew Traditional Building Materials - it's not a question of what's 'trending' or 'passé', but of really paying attention to the existing building and marrying that with the sensibility of the future inhabitant. Some spaces suit the industrial treatment, some don't, and no-one should be forced to be fashionable. I can't help thinking of the old Bauhaus principle of 'truth to materials' though. If you find yourself faking an 'authentically exposed' surface, then something isn't quite clicking in your analysis of what's in front of your nose. Not that I wasn't once taken in by an entirely ersatz 'industrial' café in Paris once, which was not, as I'd supposed, a converted butchers! The convincingly-aged metro tiles were to die for...

I had a TV in my bedroom for most of my adult life, because I was living in a house share or a studio. Whenever I've lived in my own home - which I have for the last fifteen years - and had a separate bedroom, I've not had a TV in the bedroom. I haven't had one for the last eight years and I would hate to have one again. It's sort of intrusive and it has a negative impact on my sleep. I have a radio next to my bed and will listen to that quietly because it can be soothing. I love watching TV, just not where I sleep.

Believe it or not I saw a small sized shower non slip mat in white with vertical or horizontal lines depending on mat placing in the shower . I am a true believer in safety first!! How many people will come into your bathroom to pass judgement?? I've fallen in my one person shower had a massive bruise for over a week, it could have been so much worse !? Look around to find a non slip bath mat you may be surprised at the stylish ones around now. Jmo limrie ☺️

We have them fairly often OnePlan but 99% of the time it’s family or close friends, so hopefully complete privacy is not so necessary. I will provide nice dressing gowns :) I also remembered we will sometimes be using the bath in that bathroom, since our en suite will only have a shower, so that‘s another reason to go with a door from the landing.

I love the convenience of an ensuite shower and toilet, especially in a Central London flat, but prefer if there is another toilet in the flat too.

Interesting comments here. Although almost equally divided It looks as though most homeowners prefer a good size bathroom to an en suite but bathroom companies all want us to have them. I wonder why!

I've never cared either way and have only lived in a place with one once. I'd much prefer a spacious bathroom with a window for natural light and ventilation. If having an ensuite means a tiny space with no window and a coffin stand up shower, I'd happily forgo it!

An ensuite to the master bedroom is a great asset in a family home, reducing the morning stampede to the family bathroom. It also helps create that sense of luxury, adult space. A sanctuary away from the rest of the family.

I wouldn't even consider buying a property if it didn't have an en suite, and main bathroom. My other half and I need to leave the house at the same time so being able to both get ready is a must.
