Contemporary 'Low Maintenance' Family Garden

The brief was a complete redesign of a walled town garden in Brighton. The garden needed to accommodate two small boys, who wanted a grassy space to run about on... and two adults who wanted a peaceful space to relax and entertain. The garden also needed to be relatively low-maintenance for busy people, and visually/ physically connect to the interior of the new kitchen extension through bi-fold doors. The solution was an interlocking design of rendered raised beds (matted and mulched) and patio (same flooring as kitchen), fixed seating and a play lawn. There are 'party-perches' and a 'hangover corner'. Planting is evergreen, easy-care... and fairly football-proof. There's a small space for the boys to grow their own plants. INNOVATION: The bench was built of Millboard composite decking and doubles as storage space.
