A full basement, which extends part way under the garden, was added to this large detached Victorian house in Putney.

Our brief was too ensure that the new basement felt like part of the house, and was well connected to the garden. A wide external lightwell to the rear, with generous staircase helps to flood the basement with light, and provides views to the greenery in the garden above. To the side of the house, a modest single storey ground floor extension was added to house the new internal staircase to the basement. A glazed rooflight here, and the double height space this creates further adds to the sense of light and space in basement.

The basement includes a plant room, gymnasium, home office, large family /cinema room, guest suite, utilty room and storage.
