WIMBLEDON FAMILY HOUSE

In a departure from many of our recently-completed projects, our clients were looking to build-on the Victorian features wherever possible and decorate, fit-out, and furnish the house in a ‘period’ style. However, this has been balanced with contemporary elements in order to create a thoroughly up-to-date home.

At ground floor level, the two original reception rooms have been combined to form a single, grand Drawing Room with a large central opening onto the Entrance Hall. Victorian-style plaster cornices, ceiling roses, painted timber sash windows with folding shutters and a new limestone fire surround have been installed in-keeping with the period of the house. New painted timber French windows access a roof terrace, overlooking the rear garden, atop the rear extension.

A spacious Master Suite has been created by connecting the two principal first floor rooms via a new opening with folding doors. The front room is used as a Dressing Area and features built-in paneled wardrobes, a freestanding zinc bath on slate slabs, and a log-burning stove. Two further children’s bedrooms and a bathroom are located on the second floor.

The lower ground floor has witnessed the greatest transformation. A series of low-
ceilinged rooms were knocked-together, excavated by a couple of feet, and extended to the side and rear in order to create a large open-plan space. The kitchen is at one end, overlooking an enlarged front lightwell and steps, the dining area is in the center, and a sitting area at the rear adjacent to new ‘Sky Frame’ sliding doors which occupy the entire end-elevation and access the rear garden. A large ‘walk-on’ skylight above this area allows further daylight to flood-in. The ground floor staircase was relocated in order to make this layout work. A children’s playroom, utility room, study and wine cellar are located off the main space. Sections of Dinesen wall-panelling/joinery, which match the flooring, help tie the interiors together.
