Dream Homes: 6 Incredible Scottish Homes on Houzz
From brooding castles to romantic lodges, take a tour of some great Scottish properties on Houzz
What comes to mind when you think of Scotland? Sweeping landscapes, dramatic coastlines and wide open skies are some of the things that have come to characterise our views of the country. A quick browse through Houzz shows up some wonderful examples of bold, innovative and traditional ways architects have responded to this beautiful landscape. From a tiny bothy to a dramatic stone castle, take a tour of the best of Scottish homes on Houzz, all without leaving your sofa.
Solar panels power the fridge and the lighting, large glass doors and a skylight maximise the available light and views, and a woodburning stove keeps things cosy indoors when the storm clouds gather.

Skye views
This spectacular home is all about the stunning views across Loch Dunvegan in northwest Skye. A clever mix of old and new, the architecture was inspired by simple stone agricultural buildings found in the surrounding area and uses Caithness stone and Scottish larch.

However, the building itself has an undeniably contemporary feel, with large glazed panels running the length of the building to let in those spectacular loch views.

Small treasures
This Wee House is small but perfectly formed. Designed by Jennifer Hope, a young Scottish graduate, each Wee House reflects traditional Scottish architecture in an affordable format. ‘We wanted to work with local teenagers to build energy-efficient modular homes,’ says Jennifer. The dark cladding and crisp white trim give this compact home a stately presence above and beyond its small stature.

Designed as a big sister to the original Wee House, the two-bedroom version has a pretty and traditional exterior, with the soft pink and grey tones nestling into the rolling landscape.
Towering style
Dalcross Castle is a classic sandstone Scottish tower house and, when designers Maxwell & Company were brought on board to renovate it, it had no modern services, very few bathrooms and was draughty and cold. Inside, entirely new plumbing and electrical systems were added, and plasterwork and joinery were restored. Eleven bedrooms and bathrooms were created alongside extensive entertaining, eating and utility spaces, and lights now twinkle invitingly from every window.

This Victorian, baronial-style hotel – The Inn at John O’Groats – was rescued from neglect by GLM Ltd and its client, Natural Retreats. Occupying a spectacular location with dramatic views, the historic property was restored and given a new lease of life as a small series of holiday homes with the addition of the colourful Nordic-inspired timber-clad extension.
