Room of the Week: A Fun and Colourful Playroom
Interior designer Sophie van Winden has created an inspiring, bright play area to suit children as they move through every age and stage
‘I wanted to do something really fun with this room,’ says Sophie van Winden from Owl Design, describing her vibrant playroom design. ‘It had to be a learning environment that would inspire kids, but I didn’t want it to be too childish.’
Sophie’s room at the Grand Designs Live Show in May was created with a young family in mind, so it was important that it was both functional and stylish. Sophie included plenty of hidden storage for toys and she chose a neutral colour scheme, with lots of pattern and texture, that would be suitable for both boys and girls.
The finished room is the perfect balance of fun details and smart design, appealing to children and adults alike.

‘The Lego feature is actually made from individual storage boxes,’ says Sophie. ‘I chose it because it is so much fun and makes a great feature in the room, but it is also incredibly practical, as it has lots of space for storing toys.’ Sophie got the the blocks from Bloomingville. They come in range of colours, so you can create a personalised combination.
Sophie zoned the room off into different areas to give the impression of space. ‘The pouffes in the corner are pretty, but they can also be stacked away when not in use,’ she says. The white table is great for tea parties or crafting and making sessions, or it can be pushed against the wall to create more open space for playing on the floor. The Me Sit child’s chair is by Sebra from Alex And Alexa and adds a stylish element to the room. The pouffes are by Donna Wilson from SCP.
Sophie used the Geo Mix wallpaper by Ellie Hyde from Graduate Collection as a panel of pattern on one wall. ‘I wanted a feature wall that would be fun, but not too childish,’ says Sophie. ‘This graphic design is exciting, but it won’t date, so it will suit the children as they get older.’ The wallpaper is just one of the many additions that are adult-friendly, too. ‘I wanted this space to be an enjoyable place for grown-ups as well as children,’ says Sophie. ‘It had a be a room that you can leave the door open to and it still looks great, not a play space that you keep shut off from the rest of the house.’
‘Children just love wigwams, or anywhere they can hide,’ says Sophie. ‘I chose this one from Alex And Alexa in a neutral colour, so it is suitable for boys and girls.’ The colourful hook on the wall is actually the Trophy Deer bicycle holder from Outline Works, designed for storing a bike on the wall. The giant bow wall light is from Rockett St George. ‘It looks like a ribbon on a present, so again, it’s a practical addition that is lots of fun as well,’ says Sophie. The height chart on the wall is by Rob Ryan from SCP.
