Trends: Why Geometrics Can Work Wonders in Your Home
Add a new dimension to your interior with energising graphic patterns
This year, at trade and design shows, the trend for all things geometric was very much in evidence. Here are 10 ways to use strong lines and graphic patterns in your home – and no maths apparatus in sight, I promise!
Look back for inspiration
Not all geometric patterns are new, of course – antique screens, particularly from the Middle East, often feature incredibly intricate geometric designs that work well in quietly elegant schemes. This stair wall is beautifully decorative without being shouty.

Wallpaper a whole room
Covering an entire room in a bold geometric print is a brave step, but keeping the colour palette simple, and including plenty of white, ensures it feels fun and punchy, rather than overwhelming.

Dip in with accessories
Geometric accessories are everywhere at the moment, and are a really simple, and reversible, way to dip a toe into this trend. Pick a few cushions in colours your love – don’t be afraid to mix different designs, but do keep the backdrop plain to unite them.

Make a feature of the stairs
Striking wallpaper up a stairway is a contemporary take on the feature wall and helps to connect upstairs and downstairs. You can go bold, because no one spends too long in this space.

Show good form in the bathroom
This bathroom has a more intimate feel than it would if it had been left plain, clinical white. The fixtures and fittings are crisp and clean-looking – important in a bathroom – but the wallpaper gives the space a buoyant mood that will put a spring in every newly bathed resident’s step.

Embrace your inner child
Children’s rooms are a fantastic place to experiment with colour and pattern – you can go as crazy as you like! This panel of wallpaper, echoed by the floor stencil, announces a fun space. The colour palette has been fairly restricted, though, to keep it on the stylish side of energetic!

Think architecturally
Most geometric products fall into the surface pattern design camp, but why not consider a more architectural interpretation? The strong lines in these glass doors create a really striking entrance, while the rug, coffee table and framed photos subtly echo the squares.

Play with shadows
Light shades are a fantastic way to incorporate this trend, because not only can they be a geometric feature in themselves, they can also cast beautiful shadows when switched on, as this Maskros pendant from Ikea demonstrates.

The kitchen splashback is a great place to have a bit of fun and try new things. Why not create a colourful geometric design from tiles or put wallpaper behind glass or clear acrylic? If colour is a step too far, do the same with toning neutrals to add depth in a more subtle way.
