A modern mid-century house in the Los Feliz neighborhood of the Hollywood Hills, this was an extensive renovation. The house was brought down to its studs, new foundations poured, and many walls and rooms relocated and resized. The aim was to improve the flow through the house, to make if feel more open and light, and connected to the outside, both literally through a new stair leading to exterior sliding doors, and through new windows along the back that open up to canyon views. photos by Undine Prohl

The custom glass shower and mosaic tile enclosure helps both separate and unify the space depending on the mood of its occupants. The space was planned so the husband and wife would have adequate privacy but could meet romantically in the middle. The banks of windows does not interfere and allows in as much natural morning light as possible keeping with the overhang of the roof. Truly a master bath where body and soul can relax.

Home built by JMA (Jim Murphy and Associates). Architecture design by Backen Gillam & Kroeger Architects. Interior design by Heidi Toll. Photo credit: Tim Maloney, Technical Imagery Studios. The large-scale remodeling performed to create the Hill House entailed retrofitting the existing foundation to accommodate the engineering requirements for larger windows and lift-and-slide doors, and adding additional foundations for the screened porch. In addition, the main living area’s floor level was lowered in order to improve the view of the distant horizon while standing.

To modernize this master bathroom retreat, we added square undermount sinks and square single lever faucets. Dark cabinets are a dramatic accent to the lighter finishes. The bathroom has vaulted ceilings, so the large mirror helps fill the space. Linear sconces are mounted on the mirror for great facial lighting. A herringbone tile floor grounds the room. A beautiful Quartzite slab surrounds the bathtub and was used as the countertop. Red artwork and accents warm up the contemporary gray space.

The materials in this project were a blend of ceramic tile and marble mosaics, borders, tile and slabs. The client did not want to be a slave to caring for a marble bath however they wanted something special and loved marble. To that end we used the Carrera Marble tile and slabs blended with a white ceramic subway tile and white cabinets. In the end the blended look it created was richer than it would have been if it was all stone. Repeating the same element in various forms through out the room created a unified feeling.
