Stone and planting design and installation and photography by Chris Kolb of Ark Gardens. Chris first designed and installed the tumbled bluestone walkway for this aromatic Cape Cod cottage style garden. He wanted to give it a little flare so he inflected the curve as opposed to creating a straight line. Chris flanks the pathway with two native female berrying Eastern Red Cedars and two native blooming Rhododendron viscosum (Honeysuckle Azalea) cultivars, one pink one yellow. The client requested a fragrant garden, hence the native Azaleas and foundation border lilies among Lavender and many fragrant native plants.

Large monolithic architectural details are something we try and bring into all our projects, it’s these details that allow us to be looser with wilder with our planting palettes and for the outcome to still feel considered. In this case, the benches allowed us to terrace the site creating activated zones to higher use of the functionality. Photography by Rory Gardiner

This landscape garden won the 2014 Landscape Victoria Awards for “Plants In the Landscape”. With its natural Stingy Bark twisted trees, the design highlights and enhances these beautiful sculptural trees. The plants are the landscape, attracting wildlife and frogs, with evidence of children climbing and playing in this space. The use of north facing sun has been harnessed in the court yard close to the house, offering a completely different micro-climate, and protection from the southerly breeze. This landscape garden was in the Open Gardens Australia for a special twilight event in January 2014 & 2015. With features such as decking, stonewalls and plantings that are drought hardy and indigenous. Monies raised from these garden openings were donated to the Anglesea CFA. Plants in Landscape Award –Landscape Victoria Judge, Bryan Rankin- Lifetime Member said… “WOW! This is an exceptional garden. The plants in this garden are the landscape. The existing trees have been made features in the overall landscape, and new plantings have been done to compliment and further highlight the existing trees. The use of native plants in a structured manner has worked really well, and the retention of an undisturbed strip of indigenous vegetation has been sensitively incorporated into the landscape. It was also great to see that this was a space that was explored and utilised by the whole family.” Extra information Design by Sinatra Murphy and Peter Shaw Photo by Caitlin Mills

The client asked us to create a low maintenance, highly functional front entry to this beachfront retreat. As with most beach homes, guest parking is critical and creating an easy to navigate parking area is paramount to design success. We chose to maximize the front yard without turning it into a parking lot. Native crushed stone parking pads surrounded by sun loving, drought tolerant plants create exactly what the client was looking for.

Photo by Barbara Wilson Landscape Architect, LLC A small residential, seaside property located on Fairfield Beach, Fairfield was renovated by the new owners and adapted for their active family. Barbara was the landscape architect in charge of all of the landscape elements upgrades. She designed new bluestone curving paths to access the front and side doors and designed new landscape lighting to enhance the walks. The existing trees were saved and she designed new shade and salt-tolerant plantings which were added to provide seasonal color and interest while respecting the existing plantings. Along the beach front additional native beach grasses were added to stabilize the dunes while removing some invasive plantings. This work will be phased over the next few years in an effort to keep the sand stable. Beach roses were incorporated into a hollow in the dunes. A small lawn area was renovated and the surrounding Black Pines pruned to provide a small play area and respite from the sun. Beautiful reblooming hydrangeas line the edge of the gravel driveway. Rounded beach stones were used instead of mulch in the island planting along the edge of the adjacent road planted with Miscanthus, Mugo pine and yucca. Barbara designed a custom kayak rack, custom garbage enclosure, a new layout of the existing wooden deck to facilitate access to the side doors, and detailed how to renovate the front door into only an emergency access with new railings and steps. She coordinating obtaining bids and then supervised the installation of all elements for the new landscape the project. The interiors were designed by Jack Montgomery Design of Greenwich, CT and NYC . Tree work was completed by Bartlett Tree Experts. Freddy’s Landscape Company of Fairfield, CT installed the new plantings, installed all the new masonry work and provides landscape maintenance services. JT Low Voltage and Electric installed the landscape lighting.

Location: Hingham, MA, USA This newly constructed home in Hingham, MA was designed to openly embrace the seashore landscape surrounding it. The front entrance has a relaxed elegance with a classic plant theme of boxwood, hydrangea and grasses. The back opens to beautiful views of the harbor, with a terraced patio running the length of the house. The infinity pool blends seamlessly with the water landscape and splashes over the wall into the weir below. Planting beds break up the expanse of paving and soften the outdoor living spaces. The sculpture, made by a personal friend of the family, creates a stunning focal point with the open sky and sea behind. One side of the property was densely planted with large Spruce, Juniper and Birch on top of a 7' berm to provide instant privacy. Hokonechloa grass weaves its way around Annabelle Hydrangeas and Flower Carpet Roses. The other side had an existing stone stairway which was enhanced with a grove of Birch, hydrangea and Hakone grass. The Limelight Tree Hydrangeas and Boxwood offer a fresh welcome, while the Miscanthus grasses add a casual touch. The Stone wall and patio create a resting spot between rounds of tennis. The granite steps in the lawn allow for a comfortable transition up a steeper slope.
