This property was covered with pink rock when our client called us. In an effort to be gentle on the environment, and to save money, the client took our suggestion to work with what they had by incorporating more contrasting rock to bring the property together in a cohesive design. The clients are active birders and wanted to grow their own food including vegetables and fruits. We worked with interior designer, Nikki Klugh, to select gorgeous furniture to compliment the design.

These Swirls 4x4 Bollards are used for driveway lighting on this residential project. The bollards are 37 inches tall and thus, they still "clear" most Minnesota snow banks in the winter! All our bollard lights mount on concrete piers for great stability, too! These landscape lights provide artistic sculptural markers for the driveway, day or night. A lush rooftop garden overlooking Boston’s historic Back Bay offers stunning views of the Prudential and John Hancock Tower. The character of the site is amplified by the dramatic contrast between architecture and sky. Mature magnolias underplanted with hostas form a threshold into the historic brownstone. Weathered-wood planting beds spill with new hardy shrubs, perennials, grasses, and herbs; a paper birch and a wind-sculpted spruce lend dramatic texture, structure, and scale to the space. Rugosa rose, juniper, lilac, peony, iris, perovskia, artemisia, nepeta, heuchera, sedum, and ornamental grasses survive year round and paint a brilliant summer-long display. A collection of new and antique containers dot the rooftop, and a terrific orchid collection rests beneath the birch tree during summer months.

Baillieu Architects
Baillieu Architects approached Stepping Stones school to offer our architectural and design services on a pro-bono basis. They told us that they were keen to redevelop the playground on the site which occupies the lower school at their Tower Road site in Hindhead, Surrey. Their vision was to create a haven for sensory play an exploration where the children could enjoy spending time, be physically active, interact with their natural surroundings and play in a wide variety of means. An important factor was that the children could be part of the process and take ownership of the re-creation of their playground.
Given our brief involved the participation of the children we contacted Creative Willow, a husband and wife team whose expertise lies in creating living willow play structures which the children themselves take a hand in creating in the form of a workshop. Stepping Stones loved Baillieu Architects vision and opted to build a living willow play tunnel at their site. The project took the form of a 2-day workshop led by Ganesh and Elaine of Creative Willow, who are passionate environmentalists and teachers. The children, teachers and the team from Baillieu Architects all pitched to helped to dig a willow wall and weave the willow tunnel. We also learnt how to create living willow pencils and fashioned star shapes and other decorations out of willow for the playground environment. The Children will continue to have the ongoing responsibility of maintaining and weaving new growth into the tunnel as it matures.
In addition to the willow play tunnel, we have made plans for a sensory world of possibility and exploration for the play area. There will be a water wall for water play which the children will design themselves and a "grow your own" garden area. Moreover, the existing Roundhouse will be redeveloped into a music pavilion with pentatonic musical instruments such a chimes, tubular bells and drums to provide the children with an opportunity for musical freedom and expression.
Ultimately we hope to create a playground where the students at Stepping Stones will feel comfortable to explore, play and most importantly continue to be themselves.

Weeds Garden Design Build LLC
This was a dried out weed strewn desert of a corner lot - including front, side and back gardens, with enormous parkways as well. The entire landscape hadn’t been touched in many years. We removed all the dead grass and weeds, created swales and berms, a big rain garden, paths and seating areas all with permeable paving. Also added fruit trees and veggie beds, and transformed the space completely. Now, the garden is full of birds, butterflies and pollinators! And the clients got a sizable rebate through the LADWP landscape rebate program!
