There’s nothing “plain” about this custom outdoor living environment in Plain City, OH. The deck was built using Timbertech Legacy in Ashwood with Timbertech rail caps. The railing is white vinyl rail and powder-coated balusters. The patio was built using Unilock hardscapes and features a custom integrated fire pit.

'Mexican Cinnamon' basil growing in a window box off the front deck. It's easy to slip out of the kitchen and pick a few leaves as needed. Here, the central leader is pinched out to encourage bushy growth. Photo by Steve Masley

E perché no? Qualche pianta di pomodori, zucchine, melanzane… così da avere anche la propria coltivazione bio in balcone. Un consiglio spassionato, abolite le siepi di finta edera!

A lush rooftop garden overlooking Boston’s historic Back Bay offers stunning views of the Prudential and John Hancock Tower. The character of the site is amplified by the dramatic contrast between architecture and sky. Mature magnolias underplanted with hostas form a threshold into the historic brownstone. Weathered-wood planting beds spill with new hardy shrubs, perennials, grasses, and herbs; a paper birch and a wind-sculpted spruce lend dramatic texture, structure, and scale to the space. Rugosa rose, juniper, lilac, peony, iris, perovskia, artemisia, nepeta, heuchera, sedum, and ornamental grasses survive year round and paint a brilliant summer-long display. A collection of new and antique containers dot the rooftop, and a terrific orchid collection rests beneath the birch tree during summer months.

Construction of the deck’s beautiful stone veneer columns was more complex than you might think. Each column rests on a concrete pad, and we dug piers under the pads to ensure no movement of the stone veneer in the future. Then we built a wood frame for each column and applied the stone veneer. The homeowners chose Dutch Quality Stone. The color they selected is Sienna, and the specific pattern is Weather Ledge. The pillar caps are natural limestone with a smooth surface on top and a rock face finish around the edges.
