Before and after photos of a landscape design. Before shows a steep, muddy slope and a dilapidated low fence along the side of a midcentury house. After shows the slope regraded with monolithic bluestone steps and a gravel walkway of 3/8" river stone. A new wooden deer fence with vertical slats and a Craftsman gate surrounds the back yard, and native shade-tolerant perennials frame the walkway in green.
Sweet Smiling Landscapes
In this project I set out to create a modern yet inviting front yard. Having ditched the lawn we went with a drought tolerant plant pallet made up of gray and blue foliage, with pops of orange. I save on irrigation I designed the space to capture all the rain water that falls on the property. This was achieved through contouring the land to capture rain water and then incorporating various gravels into the hard scape. Gravel slows water down dining it a chance to absorb into the soil.

The back garden for an innovative property in Fulham Cemetery - the house featured on Channel 4's Grand Designs in January 2021. The design had to enhance the relationship with the bold, contemporary architecture and open up a dialogue with the wild green space beyond its boundaries. Seen here in spring, this lush space is an immersive journey through a woodland edge planting scheme.

At this couple’s house, we worked in the front and rear. Out front, we enlarged the bedded area to embrace the front walkway and to be more proportionate with the large covered porch. Then we brought in conditioned bio-soil to improve the existing site. Next, we transplanted some larger crowded Boxwoods throughout and added shrubs, perennials and bulbs to the bedded area to make a more welcoming feel to the front of the house and giving it year-round interest.
In the rear, we enlarged the beds around the patio, created pathways to the lawn and made a step way/walkway to the patio from the driveway. For the latter, we used slab flagstone steppers and river rock to check the flow of water coming from uphill during heavy rains. We added water-loving shrubs and perennials to create an inviting feel to the rear area.

Del Valle is about defining and connecting multiple spaces with a central focal space. An open-air Atrium is the visual center point extending the amount of light traveling to each room and providing a serene place for gathering and contemplation. The interior living spaces are connected through the Atrium creating a feeling of transparency throughout the residence. The outdoor spaces are extensions of the minimalistic design of the interior rooms with additional layering of textures to delineate different moments. The various sizes and colors of pebbles mark the Atrium and create moments of contrasting elements and serve as a jewel in the center of the home.

Our client wanted to transform their overrun and cluttered yard that had water drainage issues, with an easy to maintain yard that maximized space for sitting areas and also a new spa. We demo'd the old yard and re-graded to ensure proper drainage, then created a solid surface with a small planting area. We ran 220v electrical for the future spa and also an egress cover for the basement window well that is safe for kids and pets. Viola!!

Walkways are a means of getting people from one area to another. They can be as simple as a few stones or as a design feature of the whole garden.
