This nice large new hallway now leads through to an extended open-plan kitchen/living room which is bright and inviting. We also included a new utility room on the side of the house. As part of the new hallway, we added full understairs pullout storage, and flexible freestanding storage and renovated the existing stairs with new carpet and handrails. We also added some new interior doors with glazed panels, both back and front to maximise light into the hallway itself.

Darren & Christine had just moved in, and loved the space this house would give them and the amazing views it was just one street over, so no big upheaval for their work, friends, and family. The house was just not their taste in décor, they felt it was very dark in some areas and needed ideas on how to achieve this. Christine loves what some would call bling but this was achieved in a very tasteful way for them. She was also very indecisive and worried a lot after decisions were made and signed off on, however, since she spoke to me again she would become calm and believed that she could trust me and that it will be everything she had dreamed of. Finding natural light blocks was key to this, whilst giving Darren and Christine a home that reflected them and their tastes. We changed the staircase to open treads with safety glass at the back, changed doors with glass panels, and removed the false ceiling in the hall, this combined with taking out all the dark wood, dealt with the light issues. Due to budget we could not able to remove the wall between the lounge and dining area so we discussed ways to make it an internal feature for both areas.

Located near Wimbledon Common, the scheme is a transformation of an early 2000s detached house. The scheme comprises a new façade, porch, infill extensions, and a complete interior remodel. The idea was to create a “country house in miniature”, adding spacial drama and material richness but on a human scale. The internal plan is based on the arts and crafts layout of a central double-height hallway from which rooms are oriented to the north or the south according to their use. Social to the south and private to the north. The layout is based on issues of orientation, daylight, sociability and privacy, with a combination of open plan and cellular space. It is designed to celebrate the movement throughout the house. And provide a sequence of rich and satisfying spaces. Sitting within an area characterised by the individual Edwardian villa, the new facade is intended to be a contemporary interpretation of this form whilst having a relationship with the adjacent listed building.
