This hallway was a bland white and empty box and now it's sophistication personified! The new herringbone flooring replaced the illogically placed carpet so now it's an easily cleanable surface for muddy boots and muddy paws from the owner's small dogs. The black-painted bannisters cleverly made the room feel bigger by disguising the staircase in the shadows. Not to mention the gorgeous wainscotting that gives the room a traditional feel that fits perfectly with the disguised shaker-style shoe storage under the stairs.

The plan is largely one room deep to encourage cross ventilation and to take advantage of water views to the north, while admitting sunlight from the south. The flavor is influenced by an informal rustic camp next door.

This new house is located in a quiet residential neighborhood developed in the 1920’s, that is in transition, with new larger homes replacing the original modest-sized homes. The house is designed to be harmonious with its traditional neighbors, with divided lite windows, and hip roofs. The roofline of the shingled house steps down with the sloping property, keeping the house in scale with the neighborhood. The interior of the great room is oriented around a massive double-sided chimney, and opens to the south to an outdoor stone terrace and gardens. Photo by: Nat Rea Photography

Rustic yet refined, this modern country retreat blends old and new in masterful ways, creating a fresh yet timeless experience. The structured, austere exterior gives way to an inviting interior. The palette of subdued greens, sunny yellows, and watery blues draws inspiration from nature. Whether in the upholstery or on the walls, trailing blooms lend a note of softness throughout. The dark teal kitchen receives an injection of light from a thoughtfully-appointed skylight; a dining room with vaulted ceilings and bead board walls add a rustic feel. The wall treatment continues through the main floor to the living room, highlighted by a large and inviting limestone fireplace that gives the relaxed room a note of grandeur. Turquoise subway tiles elevate the laundry room from utilitarian to charming. Flanked by large windows, the home is abound with natural vistas. Antlers, antique framed mirrors and plaid trim accentuates the high ceilings. Hand scraped wood flooring from Schotten & Hansen line the wide corridors and provide the ideal space for lounging.

The New cloakroom added to a large Edwardian property in the grand hallway. Casing in the previously under used area under the stairs with panelling to match the original (On right) including a jib door. A tall column radiator was detailed into the new wall structure and panelling, making it a feature. The area is further completed with the addition of a small comfortable armchair, table and lamp. Part of a much larger remodelling of the kitchen, utility room, cloakroom and hallway.

Summer Remodel of House in Haverford
Summer Remodel of House in Haverford

We completely renovated this Haverford home between Memorial Day and Labor Day! We maintained the traditional feel of this colonial home with Early-American heart pine floors and bead board on the walls of various rooms. But we also added features of modern living. The open concept kitchen has warm blue cabinetry, an eating area with a built-in bench with storage, and an especially convenient area for pet supplies and eating! Subtle and sophisticated, the bathrooms are awash in gray and white Carrara marble. We custom made built-in shelves, storage and a closet throughout the home. Crafting the millwork on the staircase walls, post and railing was our favorite part of the project. Rudloff Custom Builders has won Best of Houzz for Customer Service in 2014, 2015 2016, 2017, 2019, and 2020. We also were voted Best of Design in 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020, which only 2% of professionals receive. Rudloff Custom Builders has been featured on Houzz in their Kitchen of the Week, What to Know About Using Reclaimed Wood in the Kitchen as well as included in their Bathroom WorkBook article.
