Our clients and their three teenage kids had outgrown the footprint of their existing home and felt they needed some space to spread out. They came in with a couple of sets of drawings from different architects that were not quite what they were looking for, so we set out to really listen and try to provide a design that would meet their objectives given what the space could offer. We started by agreeing that a bump out was the best way to go and then decided on the size and the floor plan locations of the mudroom, powder room and butler pantry which were all part of the project. We also planned for an eat-in banquette that is neatly tucked into the corner and surrounded by windows providing a lovely spot for daily meals. The kitchen itself is L-shaped with the refrigerator and range along one wall, and the new sink along the exterior wall with a large window overlooking the backyard. A large island, with seating for five, houses a prep sink and microwave. A new opening space between the kitchen and dining room includes a butler pantry/bar in one section and a large kitchen pantry in the other. Through the door to the left of the main sink is access to the new mudroom and powder room and existing attached garage. White inset cabinets, quartzite countertops, subway tile and nickel accents provide a traditional feel. The gray island is a needed contrast to the dark wood flooring. Last but not least, professional appliances provide the tools of the trade needed to make this one hardworking kitchen.

Included in the renovation was a new kitchen with separate beverage area for entertaining. This 1961 Cape Cod was well-sited on a beautiful acre of land in a Washington, DC suburb. The new homeowners loved the land and neighborhood and knew the house could be improved. Inside, the owners wanted to achieve a feeling of warmth and comfort. The family does a lot of casual entertaining and they wanted to achieve lots of open spaces that flowed well, one into another. So, circulation on the main living level was important. They wanted to use lots of natural materials, like reclaimed wood floors, stone, and granite. In addition, they wanted the house to be filled with light, using lots of large windows where possible. When all was said and done, the homeowners got a home they love on the land they cherish. The kitchen is separated from the family room by a two-sided, stone, fireplace. The after space now houses the beverage center, a powder room (behind the cabinetry wall) and a hallway transition space from the kitchen to the sunroom. This project was truly satisfying and the homeowners LOVE their new residence.

This kitchen has four different cabinetry colour finishes and we've made it work by carrying the same hardware and counter top throughout the space. The design was initialized when our client informed us that they were going to keep their white appliances. In order to visually make the appliances less noticeable, we introduced white cabinetry at the base. Black cabinetry was introduced along the uppers to create interest and draw the eye upward away from the actual counter surface. However, if the layout doesn’t work, especially if you have a small kitchen, then there’s no necessity to add in a kitchen island. You can add a breakfast bar or counter to your existing kitchen units, or stick with a good old-fashioned dining table if you don’t need the extra work surfaces. That said, if you do have the room, take a look at some kitchen island ideas to see if the designs inspire you for your kitchen. There are a huge variety of island designs to cater to different needs – you can have sinks, ovens, hobs, wine storage and all sorts of drawers and organisers built-in, you can have separate bars and counters that extend from your island, or you could go for a kitchen island on wheels to make your kitchen layout more versatile.

How do I choose my kitchen units and cabinets?

When picking out kitchen units and cupboard styles for a fitted kitchen, you’ll first want to consider the more practical questions – how many units do you need? How many cupboards and drawers do you need? Do you need extra kitchen storage built into your units? It’s always best to overestimate how much kitchen storage you’ll need as we all tend to have a habit of filling up whatever current space we have to the maximum. Next you can consider kitchen cabinet style and colour. Shaker style cabinets and raised and recessed panel cabinets offer a more traditional kitchen cabinet look, while flat panel cabinet doors tend to lend more to the modern and contemporary style. However, going for raised or recessed panel work in a striking colour such as dark blue, green or black can still work with contemporary kitchen ideas. White kitchens can give a sleek and clean feel, but remember you may have to do a bit more cleaning of those cupboard doors if you want everything to stay shiny and fresh. Of course, grey kitchens are the neutral colour choice du jour and can be paired with pale and rich shades alike if you want your fitted kitchen cupboards to contrast with your worktop, splashback, floor, or all of the above. Kitchen ideas and accessories such as baskets, trolleys and storage jars are both aesthetically pleasing and practical as they give you extra storage space.
