Michigan BarnCountry Family & Games Room, Detroit

As part of the Walnut Farm project, Northworks was commissioned to convert an existing 19th century barn into a fully-conditioned home. Working closely with the local contractor and a barn restoration consultant, Northworks conducted a thorough investigation of the existing structure. The resulting design is intended to preserve the character of the original barn while taking advantage of its spacious interior volumes and natural materials.

Build up in a barnThe rustic roof of this converted barn is one of its chief features. It is beautiful, but also incredibly high, and while planning consent might not have stretched to building a second floor in here, it has permitted the inclusion of a striking mezzanine. The mix of rustic original features and industrial style works brilliantly and brings a once dilapidated barn up to date.
