Midcentury modern design was born out of the 1950s and 60s, in the middle of the 20th Century, as the name suggests. Often referred to as simply midcentury as well as midcentury modern, it can be recognised by the iconic designs that were born in the period, such as the G Plan wooden furniture of E Gomme and chairs by Arne Jacobsen and Charles and Ray Eames.

Midcentury design incorporates clean lines, rich colours and materials, and an effortlessly retro feel. Teak wood, tapered furniture legs, rectangular sideboards, shapely upholstery and sunburst designs are all elements that make up midcentury modern decor and design. If you want to add a bit of midcentury sophistication to your home, try a midcentury sofa with a wooden frame, spindly legs and simple soft upholstery. Make sure to add a low and sleek midcentury coffee table in walnut or teak, and you’ll be set. For full-blown retro midcentury fun, look for the famous egg chair, Palm Springs prints, bold colours and monochrome prints, pop-art posters and shag carpets. Midcentury design can either be turned up high or added subtly to a modern home, it’s up to you how far you want to take it.
