Patterned bluestone, board-on-board concrete and seasonal containers establish strength of line in the front landscape design. Plants are subordinate components of the design and just emerging from their winter dormancy.

A small courtyard at 12m2 (3x4m) can feel boxy. So curves were employed to soften the design creating flow and interest.

This house had a hidden front door so the homeowners wanted the landscape design to clarify where to walk to find the front door. A large pergola with cut bluestone pavers was designed to create the entry path.

With a limited budget, we were able to transform and update this front garden with a new modern pathway, a small patio, and a variety of low-water and low-maintenance plants. The black mulch completes this modern landscape design transformation. I included a selection of plants that provide a variety of heights, colors and textures. A great alternative to water- thirsty lawns, especially important for Northern California gardens. © Eileen Kelly, Dig Your Garden Landscape Design http://www.digyourgarden.com/portfolio/midcenturymodern.html

More Williamsburg charm in a southern hospitality residential are of Wilmington NC. And it actually has a very elaborate drainage system beneath it all.

Despite the unexpected, hefty cost, all the trees were selectively hand pruned by reputable arborists. Thinning and opening up canopies is not only reinvigorating, but reveals a venerable tree's true nature and form. To protect soils, the arborists used "spider lift" bucket truck.
The design in this part of the property is super curvilinear, emphasizing this stunning cottonwood, echoing the flow of the nature and river around it.
The dark hue of the corten steel fencing recedes, emphasizing this tree and the landscaping.

The homeowner of this midcentury modern residence in Boulder is originally from Australia and wanted the landscape design plantings to be inspired by her native land. End result was practical contemporary aesthetics, economical concrete dimensional-cut steppers, and a fabulous plant palette of ornamental grasses, hardy ground covers, and Colorado-friendly succulents.

Disconnected downspouts have been rerouted into these dry stream beds which flow into one another. In the Pacific Northwest where it isn't uncommon to have a rain event of 1+ inches, these Summer month beds turn into Spring and Fall water features. Photography by: Joe Hollowell

Eichler in Marinwood - At the larger scale of the property existed a desire to soften and deepen the engagement between the house and the street frontage. As such, the landscaping palette consists of textures chosen for subtlety and granularity. Spaces are layered by way of planting, diaphanous fencing and lighting. The interior engages the front of the house by the insertion of a floor to ceiling glazing at the dining room.
Jog-in path from street to house maintains a sense of privacy and sequential unveiling of interior/private spaces. This non-atrium model is invested with the best aspects of the iconic eichler configuration without compromise to the sense of order and orientation.

Removed old, tired landscape, and a large, diseased tree was taken down in front, which opened up view to house. We put in a very linear planting to emphasize the low-slung lines of the house. Redo of the landing and sidewalk to a generous size, in Smoky Mountain cleft stone, with a little accent wall to anchor the coach light.
Also, repaved the atrium inside, with a bright Arctic Sandblast stone, to bring light to the dark interior.

Crisp gravel lines under the extended eaves are a quintessential nod to Mid Century Modern design. Liriope and Hydrangea are moving into their fall phase and soften the transition from home to the landscape.
