Newfield Addition

Contemporary Living Room, Austin

This 200 square-foot “backyard” addition to a 1930s central Austin bungalow began with the notion to create a room to accommodate the owner’s acquisition of a six-by-twelve-foot painting by artist Michael Tracy. The addition creates a new dining room, remodeled kitchen that connects the addition to the existing living room, and a covered porch in the backyard. The theatrical exuberance of the owner, an actress, is expressed throughout the interior. The dining room, now home to the Tracy painting, takes on the formal qualities of a modern refectory, with an elongated space under a vaulted ceiling terminating at large window that provides a dramatic backdrop for the scene. French doors open to the covered patio and the outdoor living room beyond while a textured concrete fireplace connects the kitchen to the refectory, another refined but striking element that animates the space.
