This compact, urban backyard was in desperate need of privacy. We created a series of outdoor rooms, privacy screens, and lush plantings all with an Asian-inspired design sense. Elements include a covered outdoor lounge room, sun decks, rock gardens, shade garden, evergreen plant screens, and raised boardwalk to connect the various outdoor spaces. The finished space feels like a true backyard oasis.

This garden path was created next to the new master bedroom addition we designed as part of the Orr Residence renovation. The curving limestone paver path is defined by the plantings. RDM and the client selected plantings that are very happy in the shade as this part of the yard gets very little direct sunlight. This house could not be seen from the street, so the owners wanted something that would catch the eye and be welcoming. We created a second entrance of sorts with the focal point stairs that lead the eye into the woodland and provide a glimpse of the home. The river stone wall hints at the mountain cabin home that will soon be seen. These meandering walls weave thru the landscape and add much interest to this previously linear and boring view. Large drifts of low maintenance ground covers and perennials were used for seasonal color. A comprehensive renovation and extension of a Grade 2 Listed Building within the Cross Street Conservation Area in Islington, London. The extension of this listed property involved sensitive negotiations with the planning authorities to secure a successful outcome. Once secured, this project involved extensive remodelling throughout and the construction of a part two storey extension to the rear to create dramatic living accommodation that spills out into the garden behind. The renovation and terracing of the garden adds to the spatial qualities of the internal and external living space. A master suite in the converted loft completed the works, releasing views across the surrounding London rooftops.

Vardar Valley Boxwood and Otto Luyken Laurel are used to add some height and evergreen foliage to the planting. The wide, serpentine sandstone slab staircase with generous sized landings are used to create a beautiful walk to the water.
