Our client wanted a canopy over the Master Bed that was not too heavy. We scaled it back to a partial canopy and the results were spot on! The custom made bed treatment had just a bit of the floral in the pillow shams. We paired the floral with a tailored diamond pattern and a bit of plaid for just the right mix of fabrics. The outline quilting made the diamond pattern more three dimensional.

The Redmond Residence is located on a wooded hillside property about 20 miles east of Seattle. The 3.5-acre site has a quiet beauty, with large stands of fir and cedar. The house is a delicate structure of wood, steel, and glass perched on a stone plinth of Montana ledgestone. The stone plinth varies in height from 2-ft. on the uphill side to 15-ft. on the downhill side. The major elements of the house are a living pavilion and a long bedroom wing, separated by a glass entry space. The living pavilion is a dramatic space framed in steel with a “wood quilt” roof structure. A series of large north-facing clerestory windows create a soaring, 20-ft. high space, filled with natural light.
The interior of the house is highly crafted with many custom-designed fabrications, including complex, laser-cut steel railings, hand-blown glass lighting, bronze sink stand, miniature cherry shingle walls, textured mahogany/glass front door, and a number of custom-designed furniture pieces such as the cherry bed in the master bedroom. The dining area features an 8-ft. long custom bentwood mahogany table with a blackened steel base.
The house has many sustainable design features, such as the use of extensive clerestory windows to achieve natural lighting and cross ventilation, low VOC paints, linoleum flooring, 2x8 framing to achieve 42% higher insulation than conventional walls, cellulose insulation in lieu of fiberglass batts, radiant heating throughout the house, and natural stone exterior cladding.

This bungalow features a two-tier roof line to give more dimension to the front face of the home. Columns were added to the new covered front porch, and the stone below the bay window was replaced with new flagstone. A pergola was added at the breezeway area, and a new window was added to the front gable on the garage, with dark green shutters, which was finished in cedar shake siding.

This serene master bedroom was inspired by the fabulous views of Lake Erie and its ever changing tones. The custom upholstered headboard and nightstands were finished in sandy neutrals to offset the deeper toned walls. An oversized scalloped drum chandelier adds drama to the raised ceiling above the bed area while a seating area offers a quiet spot in the suite.

The small master bedroom in this 1950's era home lacked character as well as space so we added some molding detail to the focal wall behind the bed and kept furniture to a minimum, replacing the closet and dressers with built-in cabinetry along one wall. The black painted furniture provides a strong masculine foundation that is softened with a pretty chandelier, delicate hardware and deep coral velvet cushions that can be changed out with the seasons. This home, located above Asheville on Town Mountain Road, has a long history with Samsel Architects. Our firm first renovated this 1940s home more than 20 years ago. Since then, it has changed hands and we were more than happy to complete another renovation for the new family. The new homeowners loved the home but wanted more updated look with modern touches. The basic footprint of the house stayed the same with changes to the front entry and decks, a master-suite addition and complete Kitchen renovation.

Coming from Minnesota this couple already had an appreciation for a woodland retreat. Wanting to lay some roots in Sun Valley, Idaho, guided the incorporation of historic hewn, stone and stucco into this cozy home among a stand of aspens with its eye on the skiing and hiking of the surrounding mountains.

This small bedroom has a large closet on the same wall as the door. Therefore, the best placement for the queen bed was in front of the window. We chose a simple wrought iron headboard so that the room does not feel closed off and sunlight can filter through.

The large scale custom built in wall detail behind the king size bed demands attention! This gorgeous built in detail made of mirrors and wood energizes the room. Light and neutral colors lite up against the bold turquoise.
