The SSK Residence involved the renovation and extension to a single storey Californian Bungalow in Caulfield North.
In order to unlock the under-utilised and removed back yard of the North facing suburban block a new wing was proposed to allow the main living and dining areas to engage directly with the back yard and free up space in the existing house for additional bedrooms, bathrooms and storage.
The extension took the form of a north facing barn that allowed the large room to be visually, yet unobtrusively divided into the two functional zones; living and dining.
The ceilings that frame the 2 spaces allowed the extension to be nestled into the corner of the site against the side boundary to maximise the outdoor area and prevent over shadowing to the southern neighbours back yard.

The interior design scheme exudes sophistication and style, taking influence from Persian culture and heritage. The bright colours found dotted around this three storey property bring a welcome contrast to the cool grey and taupe tones which are a staple of this family home.

The key design driver for the project was to create a simple but contemporary extension that responded to the existing dramatic topography in the property’s rear garden. The concept was to provide a single elegant form, cantilevering out into the tree canopies and over the landscape. Conceived as a house within the tree canopies the extension is clad in sweet chestnut which enhances the relationship to the surrounding mature trees. Large sliding glass panels link the inside spaces to its unique environment. Internally the design successfully resolves the Client’s brief to provide an open plan and fluid layout, that subtly defines distinct living and dining areas. The scheme was completed in April 2016

This tall, thin Pimlico townhouse was split across five stories with a dingy neglected courtyard garden to the rear. Our clients hired us to design a whole-house renovation and kitchen extension.
Neighbouring houses had been denied planning permission for similar works, so we had our work cut out to ensure that our kitchen extension design would get planning consent. To start with, we conducted an extensive daylight analysis to prove that the new addition to the property would have no adverse effect on neighbours. We also drew up a 3D computer model to demonstrate that the frameless glass extension wouldn’t overpower the original building.
To increase the sense of unity throughout the house, a key feature of our design was to incorporate integral rooflights across three of the stories, so that from the second floor terrace it was possible to look all the way down into the kitchen through aligning rooflights. This also ensured that the basement kitchen wouldn’t feel cramped or closed in by introducing more natural light.
