A great way to brighten up a bedroom is with painted nightstands. In this case, we wanted to maintain a calming environment with neutral wall colors and bedding. To add a bit of cheer to the space, we upholstered two lounge chairs and painted both nightstands similar shaded of aqua. Martha O'Hara Interiors, Interior Design | L. Photo by Alexandra DeFurio. Aidan is a 12-year-old girl who lives with her father half of the time. Her parents are divorced and her father wanted his daughter to be at home in his new bachelor house. He wanted her to feel “understood” and validated as a girl entering into her teen years. The room therefore is sophisticated, yet still young and innocent. It may have “grown up” attributes such as chic English paisley wallpaper by Osborne and Little and a sassy “Like Forever” poster, but it is still comfortable enough to hang out on the flokati rug or on the vintage revamped chair.
Aidan was very involved in providing the design inspiration for the room. She had asked for a “beachy” feel and as design professionals know, what takes over in the creative process is the ideas evolve and many either are weeded out or enhanced. It was our job as designers to introduce to Aidan a world beyond Pottery Barn Kids. We incorporated her love of the ocean with a custom, mixed Benjamin Moore paint color in a beautiful turquoise blue. The turquoise color is echoed in the tufted buttons on the custom headboard and trim around the linen roman shades on the window.
Aidan wanted a hangout room for her friends. We provided extra seating by adding a vintage revamped chair accessorized with a Jonathan Adler needle point “Love” pillow and a Moroccan pouf from Shabby chic. The desk from West Elm from their Parson’s collection expresses a grown up feel accompanied with the Saarinen Tulip chair. It’s easier for Aidan to do her homework when she feels organized and clutter free.
Organization was a big factor is redesigning the room. We had to work around mementos that soon-to-be teenagers collect by the truckloads. A custom bulletin board above the desk is a great place to tack party invitations and notes from friends. Also, the small Moda dresser from Room and Board stores books, magazines and makeup stored in baskets from the Container Store.
Aidan loves her room. It is bright and cheerful, yet cheeky and fun. It has a touch of sass and a “beachy” feel. This room will grow with her until she leaves for college and then comes back as a guest. Thanks to her father who wanted her to feel special, she is able to spend half her time in a room that reflects who she is.

Simply Home Decorating
The small master bedroom in this 1950's era home lacked character as well as space so we added some molding detail to the focal wall behind the bed and kept furniture to a minimum, replacing the closet and dressers with built-in cabinetry along one wall. The black painted furniture provides a strong masculine foundation that is softened with a pretty chandelier, delicate hardware and deep coral velvet cushions that can be changed out with the seasons. DKOR Interiors Inc.- Interior Designers Miami, FL
A family of snowbirds hired us to design their South Floridian getaway inspired by old Hollywood glamor. Film, repetition, reflection and symmetry are some of the common characteristics of the interiors in this particular era.
This carried through to the design of the apartment through the use of rich textiles such as velvets and silks, ornate forms, bold patterns, reflective surfaces such as glass and mirrors, and lots of bright colors with high-gloss white moldings throughout.
In this introduction you’ll see the general molding design and furniture layout of each space. The ceilings in this project get special treatment – colorful patterned wallpapers are found within the applied moldings and crown moldings throughout each room.
The elevator vestibule is the Sun Room – you arrive in a bright head-to-toe yellow space that foreshadows what is to come. The living room is left as a crisp white canvas and the doors are painted Tiffany blue for contrast. The girl’s room is painted in a warm pink and accented with white moldings on walls and a patterned glass bead wallpaper above. The boy’s room has a more subdued masculine theme with an upholstered gray suede headboard and accents of royal blue. Finally, the master suite is covered in a coral red with accents of pearl and white but it’s focal point lies in the grandiose white leather tufted headboard wall.

The interior design components that make this bedroom work so well: custom window treatments, creative wall treatment, and the right bedding combined with a stylish area rug.
I've been asked several times about the paint colors in this room...
I always advise people that they should not start with the paint colors when decorating a room, because it's much more difficult to match other decorating elements to paint colors such as fabrics, artwork and area rugs. Where as paint colors can be matched to anything. The paint colors can also look different in a room depending on lighting, both natural and electric. Photos can be great starting points for deciding the color scheme that appeals to you, however, photographs typically don't depict the actual paint colors. Consequently, it is dangerous to say you want the exact paint colors that you see in a photo. What else are you putting in the room that has green in it? Artwork, area rugs and fabrics are great starting points for matching up paint colors, and you definitely want to have a design plan before you start painting color.
