The new kitchen bar counter sits where a wall was originally. Two species of wood were used in the cabinets, walnut and alder. The lighter colored cabinets at the back wall are in alder with Zodiaq countertops and the backsplash utilizes colored sandblasted glass tiles.

"There is not one thing I would change [in the kitchen]. It turned out with the exact look and feel that I wanted in my kitchen - I love it." - Homeowner
The small size of this Bethesda kitchen posed both a layout and storage challenge. The homeowner, an avid cook, needed a practical space for both cooking and entertaining. Adding a small pantry and microwave peninsula increased storage space and contributed additional counter space at the same time. The warm white color of the cabinetry and tile make the space feel open and inviting. The subway tile backsplash was designed in proportion with the kitchen, and adds interest to the under counter areas. Details such as a simple cove crown, double paneled wall cabinets, and exposed hinges add an understated sophistication to the room.

The owner of this kitchen is a chef and holds cooking classes often. The large granite island provides plenty of viewing area for her students while allowing her to move around the space freely. The lowered Carrera marble counter-top is perfect for prep work and is flanked by refrigerator and freezer drawers for the ultimate in convenience. A full-size refrigerator is hidden behind the pantry doors.

Painted Shaker Style Maple Cabinets
I worked with a shop that had exceeded my expectations on prior projects. When the owner told me that he had a batch of maple that was too ‘green’ to use for a clear coat, I was able to convince him that this project would be very happy to use his ‘green’ maple for painted cabinets, at a great ‘green’ discount.

We opened up the kitchen in this Old Portland condo by removing two walls, creating a new generous entry and extra dining space with the addition of a breakfast bar. Extra storage was created with drawers installed into the toe-kicks, and the cabinets were taken to the ceiling to create visual height while adding more storage. Views over the breakfast bar keep the cook connected with guests. All materials were selected for beauty, function, and sustainability. The cabinets and woodwork are handcrafted from reclaimed lumber. The back splash tiles are handmade by a Pacific Northwest artisan. The floor is made of sustainable cork, and is comfortable underfoot.

This Chicago client was tired of living with her outdated and not-so-functional kitchen and came in for an update. The goals were to update the look of the space, enclose the washer/dryer, upgrade the appliances and the cabinets.
The space is located in turn-of-the-century brownstone, so we tried to stay in keeping with that era but provide an updated and functional space.
One of the primary challenges of this project was a chimney that jutted into the space. The old configuration meandered around the chimney creating some strange configurations and odd depths for the countertop.
We finally decided that just flushing out the wall along the chimney instead would create a cleaner look and in the end a better functioning space. It also created the opportunity to access those new pockets of space behind the wall with appliance garages to create a unique and functional feature.
The new galley kitchen has the sink on one side and the range opposite with the refrigerator on the end of the run. This very functional layout also provides large runs of counter space and plenty of storage. The washer/dryer were relocated to the opposite side of the kitchen per the client's request, and hide behind a large custom bi-fold door when not in use.
A wine fridge and microwave are tucked under the counter so that the primary visual is the custom mullioned doors with antique glass and custom marble backsplash design. White cabinetry, Carrera countertops and an apron sink complete the vintage feel of the space, and polished nickel hardware and light fixtures add a little bit of bling.
