his yard was transformed from a bland bilder basic to a fun and lush xeriscaped entry way. To make the yard feel bigger, we removed the driveway and used gravel from end to end, creating an open, borderless planting and patio space across the entire front yard. For extra security and privacy, a fence was added along the front, which features an automatic gate for easy use as they come and go. With the limestone facade being one of the customers least favorite features of the house, we planted fig ivy vines to grow and cover it.

Sweet Smiling Landscapes
Tired of freezing bleak winters, this client decided to split her time between Michigan and Southern California. She bought this bright, airy home that epitomizes West Coast living, but the prior owner had not done anything to maintain the garden in many years. The grounds were filled with poorly placed and sickly-looking plants. The new homeowner wanted her garden to be a respite from subzero temperatures, filled year-round with flowers. Deciding what to keep, what to move and what to add, we came up with a plant pallet full of California and Mexico natives, and lots of succulents as well. We added over 1000 plants, filling this property with lush, year-round color that is undeniably Southern Californian.
Ivy & Bloom
An under-utilised corner of the garden was transformed into a romantic apiary, or bee-yard, featuring brightly painted hives and vintage furniture. The pebbles are a practical surface for working on the hives and retain water for the plants. Plants selected are a mix of bee-friendly perennials, herbs and vegetables, including dahlia, salvia leucanthe, anenome japonica and dianthus, buckwheat, blue kale, rhubarb, and silver lemon thyme. Woolly thyme, festuca coxii and purple alyssum soften the pebbles.

Water Re-use project using the Overflow Water coming from the Reverse Osmosis System. The waste line was run underground to the back of the fountain post and attached to the garden hose valve. The valve is locked in the open position to always allow flow when the system needs it. The watering can is removable to use the water for nearby potted plants. If the water is not used for plants it overflows to refill the bird bath with fresh water for the birds. Since the build several birds make it a regular stop in there day.

This carefully planned front yard in the Bayview shore neighborhood contains a mix of color, texture and form, all in a tiny space. It is very low-maintenance and pleasing from both inside the house and from the street year-round.
