In Seattle's Fremont neighborhood SCJ Studio designed a new landscape to surround and set off a contemporary home by Coates Design Architects. The narrow spaces around the tall home needed structure and organization, and a thoughtful approach to layout and space programming. A concrete patio was installed with a Paloform Bento gas fire feature surrounded by lush, northwest planting. A horizontal board cedar fence provides privacy from the street and creates the cozy feeling of an outdoor room among the trees. LED low-voltage lighting by Kichler Lighting adds night-time warmth. The compact front landscape of this Sausaltio home underwent a major transformation. Much of the failing concrete retaining walls were removed to gain more patio space. Ledger stone veneer was installed on existing walls. A new built-in BBQ/grill with full range bluestone for counter tops, patio floor and stairs. I also designed a contemporary, stepped, horizontal redwood fence along both sides of the sloped driveway. Low water plantings including low light succulents such as Echeveria imbricata (hens and chicks), Sedum 'Angelina', Agave attenuate, were included in this contemporary facelift. The clients requested a pea gravel patio for it's casual style and great drainage properties and a palette of mostly native plants. Secret Gardens is regularly presented with new and challenging designs. This warehouse renovation required a complete overhaul of the internal warehouse courtyard and front entrance. Previous renovations had ‘domesticated’ the building, a poor departure from its warehouse origins. The front was given a sophisticated finish with balconies added onto bedrooms and large garage and entrance doors created with a bronze/copper finish. The internal courtyard pool was modernised, BBQ and cabinetry added and the finishing touches of plants added in pots and hanging from the beams to bring greenery to this industrial space. The end result has enhanced the warehouse appeal with a modern touch.
