Color and interest abound in this corner of the yard. It is located at the edge of a riverbank where the sun and wind can be intense. Tough drought and wind resistant plants are essential. Road side favorites like Queen Ann's Lace, Coreopsis and Daylillies thrive in this environment. This garden is also planted with spring flowering bulbs that come up first. These summer perennials come up second giving the garden two full seasons of riotous color. Nancy Dransfield-Photographer

We love a cantilevered step and in this tiny Sevenoaks garden they help us fully utilise the space making it feel bigger. This is the smallest garden we have designed to date, we call it our 'Pocket Garden', and we are very proud of it. We have transformed this tiny garden into a modern, easy to maintain social space. The steps are cantilevering out of the deck creating a wonderful journey to the lower garden. Our clients said "We love the garden so thank you very much". This garden has zero threshold - a smooth transition from inside to out. We have linked to their new wooden floors and dark grey windows, connecting and fusing the two, using a simple repeat palette of materials, textures and colours. We have incorporated a practical lift-up top to the bench to store their garden stuff. We have also included three re-circulating water blades that cascade into a dark grey pebble mulch. The lower area has been laid with astro turf, fitted to represent a carpet rather than a lawn. The oak sleepers, painted and matching the window frame, creating robust steps to the lower area, where we suspend a cantilevered bench from the boundary wall. We use very few plants - Dicksonia, Hosta, Polystichum and Buxus - an easy palette to maintain.

I created a larger dining terrace for the client to allow for their expanding family. This also included a better proportioned path to access the terrace. The design included a bespoke wooden pergola hung from the side of the garage and with tensioned training wires for the wisteria and clematis to climb up and over and help provide dappled shade.

The owners of this tiny front yard craved an interesting front yard that was colorful, drought tolerant and filled with herbs. We began by tearing out the hillside of junipers and overgrown hollies against the house. We created an interesting bedline, added boulders for visual interest and lots of good garden soil. In the areas for the most drought tolerant plants such as rosemary, lavender and sedums, we further amended to soil to insure extremely well drained soil preferred by these plants. All plant choices are drought tolerant and can tolerate the full sun of this south facing slope. In this early spring photo you see blue phlox in full bloom along the walk leading to front door. In the foreground, fragrant dianthus is just beginning to bloom. Behind the dianthus, fall blooming asters are just beginning to emerge. This is a landscape of 4 season interest.
