Bastion

We asked Bastion design an extension we were planning. They took the time required to fully understand our requirements and the design they came up with was exactly what we wanted. Our builder was very impressed with Bastion's technical drawings and said it was a doddle to follow them. The finished extension looks identical to the rendered images Bastion supplied.

We engaged Bastion to provide a survey, design and submit our planning application with a supporting statement on a particularly knotty planning/development application. We had tried and failed on our own. They were professional, expedient, responsive and knowledgeable. We would recommend them unreservedly.

We were recommended Bastion by friends as we needed architects to provide detailed plans for a wrap-around side return and extension to a Victorian terrace. Cameron and Russell were superb from start to finish. After initial discussions they came back with some creative ideas which were then translated to very detailed, accurate plans. Our project (like many) had a number of issues which Bastion really helped with, giving patient and pragmatic advice, despite us being a demanding client. It felt like they were in our corner when builders, suppliers and council had questions, objections or problems. Now the dust has settled (literally) we are delighted with their designs and how Bastion transformed our living space.

We used Bastion to do our technical drawings for our extension/renovation project, after our first architect (who did the design phase) messed us around a bit with timescales and an exorbitant quote for tech drawings. Russell was incredibly helpful and really quick at responding to emails and queries, as well as great at putting us in touch with trusted people to do bits of work needed such as the structural engineer. We ended up with a really clear, comprehensive set of drawings - one of the builders who quoted for us said they were some of the best he had seen. A really excellent service all around, I would thoroughly recommend Bastion.

Cameron challenged the way we looked at our downstairs space and gave us some great ideas. We had a small extension and complete reconfiguration of the downstairs layout to be more open plan. He worked on some quirky features that we are really pleased with. The visuals they provided really helped us out as it is not easy trying to visualise how the space would look. They included visuals with sample furniture and decor. The whole process was easy and the helped us every step of the way. So pleased with the finished space!

This is the first time we have engaged architects, and the process was painless and efficient, even though most of the discussions were held remotely due to various lockdowns. We engaged Bastion after an extended search for an architect to draw up plans for our upcoming basement conversion project, having spoken to a number of Architects who we didn’t feel entirely comfortable with - we found Russell at Bastion and with that came calm, collected discussions and excellent design work and drawings, invaluable advice on so many levels, reasonable pricing and clarity as to what was and wasn’t included. No extra hidden costs so no nasty surprises. Russell dealt with the application, drew us up a set of elevations and floor diagrams based on what our vision of the basement was, worked closely with us on the heritage aspects of the application and generally impressed. We only had to have one conversation with him to get the basic design in place - he got what we were looking for from the start, and after a short discussion and some tweaks to that initial draft the new version 2 diagrams became the final agreed version. Can’t recommend Russell or Bastion enough really, soon we will have a set of extra rooms in the basement that will enhance our home immeasurably and we literally could not have done it without him.

We selected Bastion based upon other reviews, initially for an online consultation as we weren't sure whether we wanted to extend or move house. We had a list of requirements, but had not thought of a solution to achieve these (and frankly weren't sure that we'd be able to meet these given the layout of our house). Within a couple of hours, Keith had come up with a solution which blew us away, meeting all of our requirements. We then proceeded to use them for the full detailed technical design, as well as obtaining planning permission. From day one, the service from both Keith and Russell has been outstanding. They have fully considered and responded to all our concerns, and guided us through the process in an extremely professional and responsive manner. It is also worth noting that the design and consultations were carried out over video calls (due to the pandemic), and only the surveyor and structural engineer have visited our property. This approach has worked extremely well and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this approach to others. Very highly recommended.

We worked with Russell and Keith on the design for a complete renovation of our 1930s home where the building work is currently underway. We thoroughly enjoyed working with Bastion during all stages of the design, from initial ideas, finalising the design, planning and starting the building work. We enjoyed the energy the team had - their professionalism and communication was also excellent. The team were also very helpful when it came to making recommendations for separate areas of the build (e.g. builders and building control) which was appreciated. Whilst we are thoroughly pleased with Bastion, their design and their costs, the only disappointment is the build cost coming in far over the initial budget we had set together for the design. Keith Jewell provided lightening fast service in helping us by providing required elevation drawings for heritage, design and access statements in order to submit applications for Listed Building Consent for our grade II listed timber frame thatched cottage. What can I say?! A truly professional company with client needs at heart. We had some excess land we wanted to hbuild on but didn’t know how to go about it. Cameron and his team proved a fountain of knowledge and in a short time came up with plans for five new 3 bedroom properties.
