architecture and design Since completing the SPAB scholarship in 1982 I have enjoyed 30+ years experience furthering knowledge and gaining contacts in the South West of England through my work on historic buildings and landscapes; in particular the production of modern architecture and design complementary to these settings. During a 2-year sabbatical from 1994 to 1996 I worked as a project manager for UNESCO in Zanzibar’s Stone Town coordinating the hands-on building conservation skills training of 15 young tradespeople; the project undertook the major repair and rehabilitation of one of the town’s 19thC royal residences. I have worked on a wide range of building restoration projects from small private houses to major college and public buildings. As one of English Heritage's Commissioned Architects I was one of their team monitoring grant-aided restoration projects. Since 1987 I’ve served on the National Technical Panel of the Society for Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB) and as a committee member of the Devon Earth Building Association for the last 25 years have helped extend the knowledge, understanding and appropriate repair of cob buildings.
