I contracted with Esther Hansen and Christian Gluntz to carry out a complete rebuilding of my kitchen. The old kitchen had been poorly designed when the house had been converted into flats in 1982, making work in the kitchen awkward. In addition by last year both the floor and the walls were in bad shape with cracks and holes that allowed mice to enter the kitchen despite all our efforts at stopping them. In addition, the appliances were out of date and in need of replacement.
We agreed that the right approach was to do a top to bottom rebuild of the kitchen, both to address the mice problem by re-doing the walls and the floor, as well as sealing any possible holes through which they could enter. I also wanted to improve the way in which the space was utilized because it was not possible to have a proper table in the small kitchen. Esther and Christian arranged for a colleague to come and measure the kitchen. They then put me in contact with a designer in Germany who was working with them. Based on the measurements, he provided me with a number of drawings showing the options for re-positioning the various components of the kitchen to maximize the utilization of the space available. I was very pleased with the options presented. Because the drawings were done on computer modelling software, it was easy to make the design adjustments that I wanted.
Esther and Christian then proceeded to order all of the components, including not only the countertop but all the appliances. They also arranged for the floor and the walls to be rebuilt and some of the plumbing and electrical components moved to facilitate better positioning of the kitchen sink and re-location of the washing machine, refrigerator and stove. We agreed on a work schedule for the construction.. Once the various components had arrived from Germany, where they had been manufactured, they arranged for an installer to come and fit everything into the new kitchen. All of this was done according to the timetable we had agreed upon.
The resulting rebuilt kitchen has been a revelation. The re-design provided a great deal of new, useable space, making it possible to have a good sized table in the kitchen for meals and also making it possible to work much more efficiently in the kitchen due to the better location of the various appliances, new countertop and work spaces that they installed. The appliances they ordered were top-of-the-line German products. The new kitchen now looks very modern and well designed and the high quality of the finish on the cupboards and countertop is immediately apparent.
Finally – and what is probably most important – the price for the new kitchen was exactly as we had agreed at the beginning of the renovation. There were no extra charges and they did not try to get me to add unnecessary ‘bells and whistles’ to the bill. So I was very pleasantly surprised to find that the project was entirely within budget, as well as being completed on schedule.
I would highly recommend Esther and Christian’s firm to anyone who is looking to have a professionally designed and built kitchen. They know what they are doing and they deliver what they commit to doing.
