About Us

Maïtanne Hunt Gardens, Roof Terraces & Landscapes is a multi-award winning, small design studio based in west London. We specialise in the creation of elegant and distinctive outdoor spaces for both residential and commercial clients, in the UK and internationally. The studio has particular expertise in the conception, development and build of roof terrace gardens. Considered, characterful design and exquisite planting are the foundation of the studio’s schemes – we aim to enhance the natural environment, captivate the eye and bring joy and contentment to our clients. We collaborate with leading exterior architects, interior designers, landscape contractors, specialist craftsmen and nurseries to bring our unique designs to life and keeping them tailored to our client’s dreams and needs. With over 15 years’ experience, we strive to create landscapes that are elegant, practical and timeless, regardless of the location or size or budget. The studio is owned and run by Maïtanne Hunt – her initial career in the world of finance took her to Paris, New York and London. She then retrained at the English Gardening School, and at the Architectural Association School of Architecture where she graduated with a Master’s degree in Conservation and Restoration of Historical Landscapes and Gardens. Maïtanne is a fully-registered member of the Society of Garden Designers (SGD), the British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI) and the Association of Professional Landscapers (APL). She won two Pro-Landscaper awards in 2023, including Supreme Winner and she is also a BALI Principal Award Winner. We offer a wide range of consultation services – from advice on specific areas to maintenance programmes and one-off planting makeovers – but most of our work involves full design and build process and us overseeing projects from beginning right through to completion. We have experience in creating gardens for listed buildings and historic grounds that are subject to strict heritage compliance and historical restorations. We are familiar with planning applications as well as large-scale master planning and can undertake overseas projects. We collaborate closely with contractors and specialists to deliver the project on time and within the budget. Our full design and build process includes a first meeting, concept plan, master plan, build and aftercare.

Our fee structure operates on a sliding scale, as set by the Society of Garden Designers. The cost of the garden will vary depending on the size, style, access and complexity of the project. It is useful for you to have a budget in mind so that we can discuss realistic and achievable ideas during our first meeting. I hired Maïtanne after interviewing several designers. Her passion and love for her work really stood out. It was vital to me that the design of the garden be in harmony with the surrounding landscape and architecture of my home, not some identikit urban garden, which Maïtanne understood immediately. Her work ethic, commitment and attention to detail has been truly amazing. She isn’t a designer where once the design is agreed, pops in at the end to sign it off. She did everything from gaining planning permission, organising sub-contractors, choosing individual specimen trees, to doing some of the planting herself (smartly dressed at all times!). Her problem solving abilities are second to none. When issues arise, which is inevitably during a project spanning several months, she is straight on the case to resolve them, even coming on site the next day including at weekends! She is not afraid to challenge her long standing relationships with contractors to ensure the best outcome for my garden. The result is a beautiful garden which very much reflects who I am, which I’m loving more and more as each day passes, and has received many compliments from family and neighbours. Special thanks also to Carter Sexton for the hard landscaping work. His attention to detail and precision in the pursuit of perfection has been amazing, even to the extent of doing long days and weekends to achieve a finish beyond what even I would notice. The only time he didn’t turn up was when it was snowing! And also to May Nel for a wonderful planting scheme to give the feel that I was looking for, and the choreography of the flowering so my garden is like watching a firework display in slow motion. I therefore have no hesitation in recommending Maïtanne and her team, and I look forward to continuing to work with her.

Maitanne did two beautiful garden projects for us. First taming a slightly neglected and overgrown garden and creating a magic and relaxing space full of seasonal bloom. Second a complete garden transformation, which in less than 3 month looked absolutely spectacular and mature. We were very impressed with the work of professional garden building teams she engaged for projects and their ability to stick to schedules, but above all with the exquisite taste and harmony which are always present in Maitanne's gardens.

When we asked Maitanne Hunt to help us with our garden, she immediately understood what we wanted but also the limits of what could be done. Her imaginative design followed our taste and cleverly addressed the various issues of the garden, whilst accentuating its size. She was organized and very meticulous in all aspects, from the construction details to the choice of trees and plants. No task was impossible and nothing seem to deter her; thanks to her perspicacity, she managed to squeeze through the house (and a narrow door) 6 large trees, something which none of us thought possible. Maitanne's ability to transform my previously unexceptional back garden into a stylish, elegant, and welcoming space was remarkable. I hired MHD in march 2015 to create a roof terrace garden in an landmark Penthouse flat in Notting Hill, in a building designed by Walter Gropius and Maxwell Fry. I had fixed ideas of what i wanted but MHD persuaded me otherwise and delighted she did as she has created a space that married together architecture, the views, sustainable planting, the style of the interiors and above all how i wished to use the space. Her team were efficient and like her, easy to work with. Best of all she is mindful of a clients budget and spends it wisely to deliver the project on time.

Maitanne Hunt agreed to design a Japanese garden for me although she had never done one before. She quickly got up to speed on what what required and, when she came across something she was unsure about, didn't hesitate to find the right professional to advise us. She was efficient at coordinating the various sub contractors including the delivery of a tree that had to be craned over the house. She is punctual and reliable.
