Big windows and sunlight help

Can anyone make a suggestion for diffusing sunlight on these south facing windows. Want to enjoy the garden but protect carpet and furniture from full sunlight. Thank you

Inside you could get some voile curtains on a rail within the door space so they hang behind your curtains and you can draw them back when you don't want them. Or, outside you could add a roll-out canopy to provide a shade.

I agree with the above, voile curtains would work well as they would allow you to see outside and hang very delicately.

Vertical blinds are an ideal choice for large windows. Open them completely and they won't obstruct the view of your garden but will still diffuse the light. You can open them to varying angles for control over how much light you allow into your room.

If you opt for two sets on one window, you can also open them from the centre.

Hi JScott001 it's tricky to comment on the glass blocks idea without seeing photos of the house or having an idea of the age of the house. Instead of glass blocks you could look to incorporate a high level more traditional style internal window/s instead? If the corridor is on the top floor, other ways of getting light into a dark space are roof lights or sun tunnels.... getting natural light into the corridor would be the ideal. Maximising the amount of light in the corridor with well placed mirror/s will help too. PB

I have the same issue as you. I see your floor is chipboard with insulation, this is great in the winter as when the sun shines it will suck up the heat and let it out slowly in the evening, ours is still warm to walk on at 9pm, passive heating, fantastic on the heating bills. Coming in from work and having the house between 22 and 24 with no heating on, kinda gives you a smug grin. The summer can be a nightmare, 35 degrees in the house for a week or so and barely cooled down at night. So we built a pergola to the side of the windows as an outdoor eating area. This allowed us to put a triangular shade sail across the back, looks stylish (imo), keeps the temperature down and the glare out. It obviously comes down when it starts to cool, again back to warming the house up in the winter. A cheap but sound solution, also gives you time to see how you feel about a permanent structure. I bought mine from "Hanse" as I preferred the more rugged material to the nylon.

You can add skylights to the sloped roof sections on each side without taking down the entire ceiling. You will need your builders to create a deep plasterboarded reveal (like a tapered tunnel) leading from each skylight to the ceiling. Like this This is likely to be a lot cheaper and easier than removing the entire ceiling - plus there are almost certainly structural roof supports running across above the ceiling that will be exposed if you remove the ceiling. I would also definitely get your husband to reconsider the outdoor covered structure if you can as it’s not helping! What does he love about it? Perhaps there is something less light obstructing it could be replaced with? An awning or a shade sail that comes down in the winter?

There is a film that an be stuck onto your windows .
So you can protect silk ,carpets and furniture .
