Big south facing Windows
Hello guys looking for some help....we have just extended our house upstairs and down and the picture attached is a section of my kitchen doors....please excuse the mess we clearly have some way to go! we have a south facing garden and even yesterday in south London the sun was beaming in so ...we think we need to sort window covering situation Asap...the films we have looked at really seem to dull the view but maybe looking at wrong ones? Or awning or electric roller blinds? Can't do panels as we have hardly any return walls, what would you do

An Awning that can be retracted with a remote control so you always have the option of opening it out and taking in the view or once it has shut the fabric does a great job of keeping the heat out and stops the sun damaging your furniture indoors we have plenty of other options available such as sun screens but i feel like this would be the best option for you if you want to see more of what we have take a look at www.signaturedesignltd.com

We were considering renting our house out at some point but it gets hot in summer which is not an issue for living here as you can open the doors slightly and it cools straight away but for guests - it's not that easy. Comments (11)With the awning go for a dark shade such as dark grey. I had one fitted in a cream fabric and it’s gone all mossy green on the exposed bit. You can get a covered one so when it is closed the fabric will stay protected from the elements. If budget allows get an electric one as cranking it open and shut by hand is pretty hard work. Comments (10)I had to pick paint in time for the decorator (my mum) arriving. With the assistance of the local interior designers shop (who mix Little Greene paint), we quickly ruled out Pea Green (too light) and instead ended up on a choice between Garden (top) and Hopper (bottom). We chose Hopper, which looked incredible when we stood outside in the sunshine. I also asked about walls. The overriding suggestion was to keep the feature wall as the feature wall, and not to mess around with different colours for the other walls. Scary, but exciting... The only outstanding question now is whether we paper the main wall only, or continue it around onto the wall facing the window (on the right of the original picture, with the built in wardrobe). Comments (3)I am about to do the same thing. The west sun on our large full height bifolds in summer is horrendous. There are many companies that supply this film. Have a general look around. 7 years agoLuxaflex are a good starting point as they have many solutions. Silhouette shades could be perfect as they still allow you to see out and they can also roll up out of view if you wish. Come in manual or electric and give a soft visual look.

7 years agoI have the same issue as you. I see your floor is chipboard with insulation, this is great in the winter as when the sun shines it will suck up the heat and let it out slowly in the evening, ours is still warm to walk on at 9pm, passive heating, fantastic on the heating bills. Coming in from work and having the house between 22 and 24 with no heating on, kinda gives you a smug grin.
The summer can be a nightmare, 35 degrees in the house for a week or so and barely cooled down at night. So we built a pergola to the side of the windows as an outdoor eating area. This allowed us to put a triangular shade sail across the back, looks stylish (imo), keeps the temperature down and the glare out.
It obviously comes down when it starts to cool, again back to warming the house up in the winter. A cheap but sound solution, also gives you time to see how you feel about a permanent structure. I bought mine from "Hanse" as I preferred the more rugged material to the nylon.

7 years agolast modified: 7 years agoI like the idea of a retractable awning, which will add to the indoor / outdoor feel. It give you something to sit under of a lovely summers evening, without a permanence which could block light in the winter or at other duller times.
A permanent awning for me would be second choice, as it could block light in the winter or on other dull days.
One like this from :- Primrose Awnings you can add rain sensors etc, fully electric for ease.
