Need advice for awkward open-plan living/dining room
Comments (5)I would raise the curtain poles up and make more of the windows. I would suggest a round dining table, extendable as mentioned. I think as it is a new build you probably need to keep to modern with an eclectic twist. Changing the flooring doesn't need to be over expensive but would make the room feel bigger and would give you more flexibility. I would use warm neutrals on the walls and use colour in your soft furnishings, rug and accessories. A few fab pieces of art with colour would look great. As mentioned above you could easily change the point for the TV. Use good quality wood floating shelves and you can have a space at the back pre-cut on order for the wires to go down and hide wiring and access by a cable tidy in a neautral colour for the walls. This will take away furniture on the floor taking up space for the TV and digital box, Xbox etc. Making the room feel bigger and this TV was on special bracket so you can bring the TV out and re-position or tilt up and down. Picture from past project including floating shelves and cable tidy. These shelves are in walnut with oak stripes on the front but there are many different woods you could choose from....See MoreOpen Plan Room Design Advice
Comments (10)Dear James, You have a great feature there with your fireplace and wood burner. I really like the exposed brickwork, and the way this feature within your space flows through from the fireplace, stairs and in your kitchen/ dining & breakfast room. This is a really good focal point for your space in setting a theme. The larger shelf that sweeps round that you currently have an armchair in front of can ideally be removed with the unit under it also being taken out. This would open the area near the stairs; allowing you space to move through into the centre area easily. Opening the stairs themselves will allow light to flood through, this will greatly improve the access you have to natural light. Try to go with a unified neutral tone that reflects the natural light in the day, I'm not saying brilliant white here, a warm cream, with a sandy undertone, one that ties in with the beautiful wood surfaces in your kitchen. Consider spotlights that positioned correctly will illuminate key focal points in the evening to create an atmosphere, and highlight the textures and features of the space. Mirrors are brilliant pieces for reflecting light and creating the feel of more space, and positioned right can help the flow through your space. Use accessories to define your zones such as seating area and kitchen. experiment with pattern and colour to create your theme. I hope these simple but effective tips help to give you a start on your ideas for your space. We are here if you would like to discuss any of these further, please don't hesitate to contact us. Comments (12)Thanks for those ideas... Daisy do you mean to have the microwave over the fridge? if so i'd love to do that, but unfortunately my husband's shorter than me and my MIL who sometimes minds our kids is 5ft nothing so I would be the only one who could reach it. I'm not sure if the drawing shows but the row of all pantry cupboards is actually across the back of an adjoining room (dining room) so its a bit of a walk away. of course quarantining the microwave in there would be doable but I'd prefer to keep it closer if possible. Strawberry 47, great idea also to put the microwave under the bench except we already have only got room for the bare minimum - 2 corner cupboards, 1 set of drawers, a sink cupboard, and one filler base cabinet of 20cm to put trays & cutting boards. That's it on the bottom. The pantry that will sit on the benchtop is only 30cm deep external... meaning the microwave wouldn't fit inside without modifications (such as stealing 450x30cm from it... but would rather not as that would make storage space there very minimal. lkirk44 thanks for the thought re everything lining up on top, I agree... going to have to work out how to do that somehow! I was actually thinking that maybe we could add another wall - even just a full height shelf sitting on the benchtop to the right of the sink - parallel with the partial wall where the row of tall cabinets start. It would shut off the view a bit but not that much.... It would mean the microwave could sit across that corner without the ugly back & cord of the microwave being on display. If only you could create a virtual full size model and walk through it to see how it would feel!!! :)...See MoreUnder stairs drawer/shelves
Comments (61)Funnily enough I was just thinking about kitchen artwork. My sis got custody of decorating with big Banksys so I'm not allowed any of that ;-) I do like this artist https://www.google.com/search?q=Georgia+Cox+artist&client=ms-android-vf-gb-revc&prmd=isnv&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiY_-zgvsriAhUoRBUIHaHeCoEQ_AUoAXoECA8QAQ&biw=360&bih=657 But originals might be a bit much for the kitchen (and my budget!)...See MoreThe Vintage Bean
