How wide is this garden?

Can you give me an idea of the width of this garden please? Ours is only 14 feet wide and I'm wondering if we can create the same effect. Thanks.

Dear Alice,

The garden is 7.6m wide at its' widest point (just in front of the low wall visible at the front of the picture), and narrows to 4.5m wide by the shed at the rear of the garden. 14 feet is 4.26m so you could do this but it might be a little tight. Suggest you clear as much of the existing planting and landscaping away as possible, and then mark out some circles on the ground to see if it will work. Perhaps try a 3m diameter circle which would leave a small space at the side for planting?

Thank you both of you! @Jen P: love the idea of looking at what Alys Fowler did. I just took a quick look at pictures of the show/garden and it's exactly the look I'd like to go with. I'll have to try and find a video recording of the show somewhere, as the YouTube link that's on the blog you mentioned does not work. I'll definitely be removing all the paint from the brick walls & repainting. Gravel is good too, but I am also toying with the idea of having decking everywhere instead of the current concrete. Water feature is a nice idea - it would add a relaxing element to the garden, especially in summer when we can sit outside on a Sunday morning to enjoy coffee and a good book! @Patrina: thank you for sending the picture. Interesting idea of splitting the garden into two paths, but I do not think mine is wide enough for that...

Wow, thanks for the input. Initially we discussed the idea cutting back the conifers with the our tree maintenance company when they come around twice a year. However, they showed us that just behind the conifers outer green layer is just sparse brown aged stems, cutting back the growing tips would just expose this and it would not recover unfortunately. We could cut from the top a reasonable amount (like your first image shows) but sufficient so that it provides enough privacy from line of sight when looking from the garden. I've attached some aerial views..(I think the hedges are trees have been automatically "ENHANCED" to look more fuller than they actually are!). We did consider biting the bullet, taking it all down and then starting again with new fencing and then some form of fast growing plantation (trees, bamboo etc), something that would at least give us a minimum 1 floor in height privacy reasonably quick.

It's not so much just the steel above you need to worry about, it's the returns on the side. The steel sits on the wall, and there is a bare minimum for that, I can't remember what it is. ( the Structural engineer will advise ) The size of the steel is dictated to by what its holding up and then that has a requirement for the width of nib either side. It could be anywhere from 100mm to 200mm depending on load requirement. Check with your Building Control department, or the builder. Thus it could be nearly half a meter less wide than you're envisaging.

If budget allows, I would remove the gravel and pave the area either with sandstone for a rustic look, or outdoor grade porcelain for a modern look. Leave a clear area all round for planting pockets. Then you can string or hang outdoor solar lights to create some prettiness. You can dress a courtyard garden with outdoor mirrors or art too. Depending on your tastes, modern or cottagey, plant some bamboo, Trachelospernum star jasmine or Clematis on the walls (they will need tying in) on the sunny side. Roses love sunshine too. Fatsia japonica is a great exotic looking evergreen shrub that is very easy to grow. On the shady side try Japanese maples, ferns and anemones. You can have some pots grouped together of, say, summer geraniums which are so easy to grow and will flower all summer long. Buy the biggest pots you can afford as they won’t dry out so quickly so easier to maintain. Then finish with either a nice outdoor sofa or a table and chairs. A small water feature is always nice if you like the sound of water. www.primrose.co.uk sell loads. They usually come with a pump and a very long lead (32 feet) so you can plug it in.
