Flowers for the flower bed

Hi can anyone tell me what flowers would look nice in the flowerbed on the right? Needs to be something that is all year round, and easy to grow (come rain or shine) as I am a hopeless gardener! Preferably some colour too? Thanks!

Most perennial flowers die back in winter, bursting back into growth in spring and summer. I would suggest small evergreen shrubs which flower in spring and summer but keeps its leaves during winter. Looks a nice sunny spot so I would suggest Cistus which has pink or white flowers right now. Another good small evergreen in Hebe which forms a neat mount with purple or white flowers in summer, there are many, many varieties. You could also add a ground cover shrub rose which although not fully evergreen they flower all summer long and are not tall. The first picture is my shrub rose called Laura Ashley (there are many varieties), the second is my Cistus and the third pic is a Hebe. All they ask is a good watering daily, unless it’s raining, to get their roots established, and a handful of growmore or any other feed, in the spring. Once they are established then they won’t need much watering.

Besides the great suggestions and advice from Sonia I’m also going to add hardy geraniums (many varieties,) lavender and Russian sage. Along with the Cistus once they’ve had a little initial care to settle in they’re drought tolerant, good for a sunny spot and won’t mind a little neglect.

Trees can grow incredibly tall and wide 20 ft to 100 ft depending on the species. There aren’t any trees that grow just over 6 feet and no more, unless you try fruit trees that are grafted onto a dwarf rootstock which keeps them small. . However there are some lovel shrubs (multistemmed) that grow 6-10 feet high. You need to check aspect (sunny/shaded) as well as soil type. You can get a tester from garden centres for a couple of quid. You could try Viburnum tinus an evergreen with white or pink flowers in winter. There is Photinia which is also evergreen where the new growth is red and very pretty. Cotinus is deciduous and has lovely purple leaves and frothy flowers in summer.. Lilac (Syringa) is a large very well known shrub with fragrant flowers, although it does tend to spread. My favourite at the moment is Sambucus Black Lace (I’ve just bought one!) with gorgeous Lacey purple leaves and pink flowers. There are so many wonderful shrubs you can plant, but it depends how much time you want to spend tending your garden. The plants I’ve suggested are really easy to grow. I like Sonia’s idea for an obelisk and a climber. The winter flowering jasmine might be nice and give you some winter colour ( p.s. I’m no good at remembering the Latin names:)). Alternatively I thought some flowering spikes might look interesting with the natural looking mix, so something like perennial foxgloves, verbascum, acanthus (think there’s an evergreen variety of this), penstemon etc. For spring flowering you also look at Aquilegia, some of the vulgaris varieties can grow quite tall (up to 1m). They do have a tendency to self seed everywhere tho but easily controlled and very pretty when in flower. I think an evergreen of some sort would look good and anchor the rest of the planting, something that’s easily controlled such as osmanthus holly olive, yew, or the upright euonymus, all slow growing and won’t be fussed about being clipped.

Lavender should do well if it gets sun most of the day. Look up some English varieties as these can cope a little better if you get cooler temperatures. Only thing with lavender is that can go a bit woody after a few years so you may need to take cuttings or replace. Hydrangeas like those in the photo are thirsty plants and can get fairly large and probably better suited if the border is about a metre deep. Roses would look nice tho, look for patio roses that stay fairly compact and improve soil with compost and manure. Another option is Salvias (or sage) there’s plenty of varieties including many blue ones so worth shopping around. And how about some white alliums for height, these are bulb plants so they don’t take up too much space (see pics below). When shopping for plants look up their individual requirements and eventual height and spread and this should help narrow down options.
