DIY Hallways Renovating

Need advice, have these tiles been laid well?

I dont want to cause an issue with the contractor who has laid these tiles, so looking for other opinions if possible pelase. I think theres issues, but worried i'm being a bit over sensitive when in fact, they may have done a great job, so additonal opinions will really help.

It's our entrance hallway, victorian style tiles. See photos attached. Thank you!

What stands out to me is the long black tiles not being straight.

What in particular is it that concerns you?

Thansk for coming back. I think its just that most things arent straight. grout lines go thick to thin, the rightangles of the corner pieces arent square. Even some of the red square tiles in the middle arent in line, and I just dont get why. He used self levelling latex on the floor first so all level. Its an old house so walls arent square but surely that should just mean the outside tiles have the cuts and weird angles. The inside patterns should all be square. Just feel like its a poor job. But maybe Im just expecting better and its unrealistic, thats what I dont know?

Hello. You might ask a local flooring supplier to take a look - someone who supplies and fits flooring. They may be able to apply a self-levelling compound that floats over the surface, then sets, taking out the unevenness of the tiles and fills all the grout lines (which would eventually show through if you simply applied a vinyl over the top). You might then be able to fit a cheap vinyl to the flat surface. DIY shops sell levelling compounds (search for "levelling compounds" online to see the products available) if you want to try yourself, but the professionals have proper spreading tools and the experience. One issue you will need to check is whether, by covering the existing tiles, you will raise the floor too high and affect existing thresholds and doors; again, your local flooring specialist will advise. Hi Sharon, why not install an interesting victorian wall panelling? Like the one on the link below and photos attached. You can paint it in any colour and it’s an elegant, contemporary solution for English bathrooms. Hi, I'm certain retailer would like to get paid as much as you would like to have £2.5k worth of flooring to your satisfaction. In contrast to what few imply that you have been "ripped-off", you have entered the contract to which at the time you believed to be value for money. What level of service have you been sold is another matter and it sounds there is some sort of miscommunication on how and with what products flooring should be finished around perimeter. Manufacturer states for expansion gap to be necessary requirement and before taking your order, estimator/salesperson should have explained all the options available. Beading or any type of moulding would not work against bifold door frame, and simplest option would be Premier Trim Little Lip from "StairRods". It's available in various surface finishes. As far as regarding "floor movement", floor should move under foot but only very slightly, as its "Floating Click". If there is excessive movement, that would most likely be inadequate subfloor preparation (if any was applied). As with any LVT products, due to lack of mass (weight), absolutely crucial and most important job is to prepare subfloor. Again, it goes down to what you have been sold by the retailer. I'm sure you can get someone to talk sense and resolve it amicably, and if not you first port of call should be "Karndean". If retailer is authorised "Karndean" installer, they will take it on board to rectify any issues offering retailer to correct it or organise for Master Installer to attend. All the best.

Matt, are you planning to lay this yourself or employ someone? Because the cost of fitting herringbone, especially glue down, will be more than the flooring itself. It will be A LOT. Which is false economy for a cheaper quality floor. There is a lot of prep work involved for glue down systems. Floor has to be levelled, latexed, polished, prepped. And they are a nightmare to get up if you ever needed to (eg water leak/bad scratch) I would spend more on a decent quality click style herringbone (it ‘clicks’ together rather than being glued to the substrate) & spend less on the fitting this way. So overall, even if the total cost is the same, you get better quality flooring that will last longer, is more durable, better quality & is easier to take up if you needed to in the future. Way faster & cheaper to fit, even a DIYer can fit it, really easy. Kahrs & Karndean (reputable brands) do it in 4 or 5 colours. QA Luvanto is another big brand, they do a good range of herringbone click in various colours. Lamett (Yukon range) have a good selection & is amazing quality & well priced. Moduleo do click style planks but not sure about Herringbone, have a look. Amtico & Polyfloor don’t yet, but will be moving towards this style as people are getting fed up of paying so much for the messy & expensive glue down fitting. Amtico & Polyflor now offer click style planks in some colours, but not yet HB. You could also search for ‘click herringbone LVT’ and ‘click parquet LVT’ on Google & see what you find. Main thing to look for is the wear layer (top layer) - the deeper the better. Also something with a good warranty (Min 10 years - but some are 20 years or even lifetime). Check out reviews, order samples (often free) & test them yourself with water & Key scratching! Anything designed for ‘heavy traffic’ or ‘commercial’ is of course going to be more hard wearing too & generally good. Also don’t be afraid to call/email the manufacturers direct for their recommendations, and to find out all the spec of the products so you could compare them. So, I would increase your budget for the floor itself - but decrease your budget for the fitting - by having a click version rather than glue down! £30m2 is realistic. How big is your area? Because sometimes the more you buy the better rate you get. Also look out for bank holiday/Easter discounts!

I’m in agreement with you about the grout lines going thick to thin and that’s what makes it look wonky, especially on the long black tiles.

I agree: this is not a great job. On a flat surface you would reasonably expect the tiles to be laid square and true and therefore grout lines to be the same width everywhere. Furthermore, you would expect the job to be planned in such a way that there are no cut tiles within the body of the tiling, and the tiles are ‘phased’ to minimise cuts towards the corners of the black tiles. Here you have cut tiles, both red and black, in unexpected and unnecessary places. Finally, dependant on how long the job has been completed, I’m surprised to see a residue of grout on the tiles. This would normally be polished off soon after the grouting is done and, if your tiles are terracotta (which is porous) they are generally sealed before the grouting is applied.

I’d expect the white grout lines to line up with each other on either side of the decorative border.

Very untidy job, and why hasn’t the tiler cleaned off the grout residue? This should be done pretty quickly before it hardens too much. Sadly poor quality tiling is a common dilemma on Houzz.
