Regulations for space above fridge

Hi, does anyone know if there are regulations for the minimum height required above an integrated fridge/freezer? We had a frame made for the top of fridge/freezer but because the ceiling is not perfectly straight there is a large gap at one side and a tiny gap at the other. It will need remade but I wondered what the minimum space should be?

Your appliance manufacturer probably has a guide in the installation handbook. It probably says you need a gap of 500mm x 100mm. In other word your boxing above the fridge probably needs a grill in it or a vent hole in the wall behind.

Personally I have never understood the idea that you take an appliance like a fridge and then put a frame around it to make it the focal point. In my opinion an integrated fridge is better as it works with the contemporary feel of a modern kitchen or the traditional feel of a shaker door. An integrated fridge also doesn’t sit forward of the cabinets, won’t have a gap around it and the fridge aperture will be wider allowing easier storage. Furthermore if you look at the size of chiller space you will likely find the integrated fridge is bigger.

Agree with Daniel with taking hot items out of an oven and having worktop space to put these down. I also agree with Golddust that the original designers layout is the best. If you do consider moving the gas hob under the window, speak to a gas safe engineer first, there are regulations regarding gas appliances and open windows.

I guess both fridges you are talking about are double door, and wider than regular fridges? I'm bit confused with some comments.... And difference is that french has freezer box on bottom+ 2 upper doors, while american has freezer in one side? Is that correct? If thats the case, and you already consider space and budget (french are more expensive), my recommendation is: If you are more used to use frozen food: go for american style, the frozen food is better organized than in french one. If you use more fresh food: french style, the fresh food has better organization and space I personally prefer...... French Style!.. because is wider space for fresh food to be stored (imagine a family size tray/cake) , I feel less food goes to waste, and i don't mind frozen food to be a bit stacked But again, it depends on what you are used to. There are minimum clearances. It depends on what make of fridge/freezer you have. I used to know them off the top of my head when I designed kitchens but the manufacturer's always provide installation guides with clearances. I would try and allow a bit more if the fridge freezer is completely built in to a surround as the warm air escapes up the back. There is also a minimum distance to the wall at the back.
