How would you tile this bathroom?

We are currently planning a full bathroom refit. The layout of the sink and bath will not change but we will be upgrading everything.

However, we’re not sure how much tiling to do as we don’t want it to overwhelm quite a small room.

Should we run the tiles up to the ceiling and across the entire length of the wall? Should we do a step down when we come to the sink? Do we do a statement tile in some areas or keep it all consistent?

For the floor we’re thinking a patterned tile, paired with a warm paint colour for more personality. The house is Victorian and fairly maximalist but as the bathroom is north facing we don’t want to go too dark.

I would use very large scale tiles around the bath and shower area and tile to the ceiling. For the basin/vanity splashback I would also tile a wide strip all the way up. That small section behind the basin fragments the room. I would use the same tiles for both. Go for white or a light cream.

@Sarah L definitely referencing that Victorian style but with warmer colours, something like this

Update -- my plumber finally returned. Not sure what he did while here, but he told me again it wasn't working -- then he did some work on a radiator which had a small leak. We were having a long discussion about options on pumps, new showers, taps etc and I read out the installation guide and he tried it again, and suddenly it worked. It is bizarre as I don't know how many times i tried it previously. My friend who works in construction ALSO called earlier today and tried it several times to no avail. It must have been extremely stiff or perhaps the plumber realised some airlock whilst fixing the radiator since I think water pressure is much stronger since he went. Thanks for everyones help -- i learned lots on plumbing and a valuable lesson to take out the installation manuals myself and not trust that trades men know everything!!! I feel like celebrating!!

It depends what type of tile you are referring to, porcelain and ceramic tiles are well-known for being low maintenance,if you regularly clean your tiles with warm water you should be fine! Please note this would not suit natural stone as it would remove the sealer - a specially designed cleaner should be purchased for these.

I don’t understand- if the electrician can get power to a mirror light why can’t he get power to the wall lights you wanted? I suspect what you really want is a light either side of the mirror in which case they will have to be at least IP44 rated as one will be very close to the bath. To fit this you will make a mess of the walls and the ceiling which you may be fine with if you are refitting your bathroom but won’t work if you are trying to work with what you have got. If the bathroom needs to be unchanged I would want ceiling inset spotlights (on a dimmer to enjoy relaxing soaks in the bath). In my opinion the fitting you have shown in the post isn’t good enough to provide all the light you want in the room. If you can’t have inset spots and can only have one ceiling fitting then seek the advice of a lighting specialist shop. I think that they will suggest more lights on a ceiling track, reflected off the ceiling and the wall opposite the basin rather than a light source pointed towards the mirror (which will produce shadow and glare.)

I think a completely white bathroom looks too stark and while I understand many people choose white or aqua colours for their bathroom I think dark and earthy colours look better. I think there is a reason that Spas choose warm restful colours and given you have a white suite and tiles there will still be a lot of white in there.

If you could squeeze in a freestanding bath then you could have the t&g panelling instead of tiling. So many options.

Hi Jess! If you're planning on re-doing the tiles we think running the tiles up to the top of the bath-tub area and alongside will look more cohesive. With the bathroom sink, you could always opt for a splashback if you're worried about overpowering the room with tiles. I hope this helps, Sarah! 😊

Would definitely suggest tiling up to the ceiling in the bath and shower area with a minimal number of breaks so there is a decent flow between spaces.

You can incorporate a feature on the bath panel (if you plan on doing this), basin splash back or feature the wall the with shower head. So many options as it all comes down to your likes and dislikes so be sure to incorporate your preferences in the design to make it unique.
