painting a kitchen worktop

Anyone ever painted a kitchen work top before?
So I currently have a worktop called “earth stone” bought just under 10 years ago. Since I bought it, about 2-3 years later it faded in colour (was meant to be a Snow White). We contacted the company who made it to advise what we could do to bring it back to life but they said go to the place we bought it from. Which we did and they gave us a refund - so guess there was an issue with the actual product. Did try to sand it down and use chemicals but no luck. So - we are looking to paint it as don’t want to rip it out to install a new one.
My idea so far is to
1- prime with zinsser bin
2- use zinsser all coat Matt (water based)
3 - top coat with polyvine heavy duty varnish + small amount of glitter to give it a slight sparkle

What is everyone thoughts?

What is the material of the actual worktop? It sounds like laminate from your description. You could try and paint it but its a heavily used and cleaned item so there are no guarantee's that it will stand up to constant use even with the correct primer. I think its a waste of time and money but if you are aware that it is unlikely to work then its your choice. I would just live with it until you can afford to change it.

It’s called earth stone, it’s extremely thick and solid. Nothing like laminate about 10 years ago one would be about £1000 not sure what they cost now (I have two in the kitchen)

I was going to go for 600 x 600 mm floor tiles. You can probably just about tell from the computer generated image I wont have space for much of a splash back. I like the grey in the first photo - it's neither too dark or light. On the opposite side of the main kitchen run i'm also having a bit of a splash back because i'm having a 1200mm base and wall units fitted. The worktop will run down the side of these units. I'm set on having a granite worktop to be honest! My main concern is the room looking too white. That's why i was thinking of painting the ceiling the same color grey as the glass splash back. The appliances on show will be all be stainless steel so that will break up the white a bit. Maybe paint the plinth the same color as the ceiling and splash back as well? Or perhaps darker floor tiles, darker walls and white ceiling? I'm not great with matching colors! It's costing a fare wack so i really want to get it right! Thanks for all your help in advance.

Generally it has to be Quartz, though we do love others, as sometimes they can give the right feel for the design you want. Different metals can look amazing and Quartz can't replicate these. We are just starting a project that has mainly Quartz but one side of the island will be copper . . . Can't wait to see the finished look

Hi, I would definitely consider repainting the doors (especially if it works out cheaper) and would consider a dark grey with blue undertone to co-ordinate with your tiles whilst cutting between the wood / wood sort colours and shades. I would also change the door handles if you then would like to go for a wood worktop, I don't think It would look over the top. Alternativly, if you feel that you dont want a high maintenance worktop, I would look at the wood effect laminate worktops, they do vary in quality depending on where you buy but many nowadays are made to be tough and durable and require no additional maintenance except the usual cleans to maintain hygiene. Thanks ‘Man about the house’, we hope to house the boiler, but as it’s non-standard size (it’s a commercial sized boiler) we are exploring doing a bespoke cabinet with a standard door but this depends on the cost! I like the idea of a light and airy kitchen - will definitely explore this. For cabinet doors, am now thinking perhaps f&b ammonite coloured doors but worried that grey won’t be in fashion in a few years so perhaps looking at colours that are more classical/light such as f&b old white or James white. Currently testing these colours on our kitchen wall! Will post pictures when am home.

So earthstone is 28mm chipboard covered with an acrylic bonded surface. Laminate kitchen worktops are made up of sheets of kraft paper which are mixed with resin to create a stiff, brittle sheet (a laminate sheet). This sheet of laminate is then bonded to a chipboard base to create the laminate worktop that's ready to install in your kitchen.

I dont think there’s any paint hardwearing enough for a worktop, but I’ve heard good things about vinyl wrapping which could be an option. There are trades people who specialise in this. There are different grades to suit different situations.

Yea heard about them, but unfortunately nothing good. Plus the £ is quite high.
My other option is try to tile it with a decent porcelain- still get to keep a really decent look plus the durability. It’s jus the gaps in between

I haven’t done it myself, however I think you can get epoxy resin kits to go on top, which would be a lot more durable than paint. The kits come in all sorts of colours and are relatively reasonably priced. From memory, I have a vague recollection of someone on here coating a bathroom unit and it looking really good. (I can’t remember who though!!)
