I am painting a wall with wood panelling on in my house. Help??

When painting the wall and wood it is leaving marks under the paint and light marks? does anyone have any idea whats causing this. we caulked the panelling, applied bullseye 123 primer to the wood then used dead flat farrow and ball paint? any help how to get a nice finish would be welcomed.

I would have suggested eggshell for the wood part but as you have used zinsser primer you should be able to apply the emulsion over it. Try and finish a small part first with 2 coats. It does not look completely dry to me and probably needs 2 coats minimum. You might even need 3 to even it out. I prefer the estate emulsion to the dead flat but that's just me.

I agree that keeping the theme throughout a property with regards wall colour adds to the synergy and flow of the place. Our own cottage walls are all the same colour in every room. However, we accessorize with differrent accent colours that work well room to room. Sticking to the warmer neutrals will help in the north facing rooms as the cooler ones can make them look colder. However, I believe that the accent colours can soon warm the cooler ones up. White Tie by F&B is a good neutral tone to work with, and i prefer to paint skirtings, architraves and possibly the internal doors ( depending on type ) in all the same colour, which also adds to space and flow. I'd highly recommend that you go for either Dulux and have the paint mixed to type in the same shade ie Emulsion for the Walls and Satinwood for the woodwork, or Valspar at B&Q ( used to be Crown ), infinitely better paint than F&B.

Help with painting bath panel

I had a cream suite in my previous house and to modernise the room for sale, I painted the walls grey and got a grey wood replacement bath panel. In this house I have a similar panel and I just sanded it and painted with a satin wood paint. Perhaps find a grey loo seat, then colour match the panel with it? I will try to find the pics of the grey/cream bathroom and post them so you can see the colours together.

HI Gina, Definitely paint it out - doors, windows and stairs (leave handrail dark to contrast ). I spent 10 years at our previous 1930's house debating whether to paint the original bannisters which had been varnished by previous owners. Prep it all well - sand and clean and prime or you may get away with no sanding and use Zinsser B-I-N primer. I used white eggshell on bannisters and stained the handrails dark. I also painted the hall and landing walls/ceiling in Pavilion Grey (valspar colour match) and white. I can't tell you what a difference it made to the brightness and feel of the area and we already had big stained glass front door and long window on the stairs but the colour scheme really brightened it up. Will try to add photos.. Good luck. BTW we've recently moved to an 1830's weavers house and its dark, dark, wood EVERYWHERE!! Lots more painting to hone my skills..!

Thank you! I can get some F&B samples to try. I absolutely love the dark colours and I think that would be better. However, my hubby might disagree as we have just had the area painted white (had the whole house painted white!) so what colour would you suggest for the sofa, rug and lighting if we kept with the white walls, white TV unit to create a warm snuggly feel, please? Apologies I should've mentioned this to start too
