what colour should I paint my hall?

Need advice on colours for the hall! Was thinking of an ice fresh warming white on the walls and all the woodwork and then black doors

But it could be awful!!

That’s an unusual staircase - 1970s maybe? If you are going for a mid century look then I think white walls and wood would look fab. I wouldn’t paint the staircase, let it shine. Here’s a couple of pics I found on Pinterest of the same house.

Yes it’s a 70’s house. Hoping to change the glass to a reeded glass. I painted the railings of stairs black as they were an awful white. I think I’ll just paint all the walls and woodwork around glass and doors white.

What would you think of black doors?

You can colour stain the roof as well (assuming it is wood or cedar shingle). I have done this in a previous house but because it is the roof it won't last as long as the outside walls. Therefore I recommend that if you use a garden shade (don't use standard paint because the end finish will look poor) on the roof you should choose a shade of brown- personally I would try to go a little lighter than the current colour. The roof colour in my opinion dictates what you can do on the walls. I painted my shed black which was a good contrast to some lime green planting and the inside which I painted ivory. But I also think Caroline's recommendation for pale green is nice.

Hi, I'd keep both the same colour and I don't mind the white; however the exterior has fairly warm hues with the porch door, tiles, brickwork and so the white is a contrast. If you are looking to paint the door, I'd go for Taupe-grey so there's a hint of brown present just to make the external door and internal door feel more cohesive.

It sounds like you have plenty of natural light coming in so should be fine with most things. I think the blue all over would be a little too much with north light - making it feel a little cool. I would go with the suggested half and half which will also lift the height a making it feel more open. With the blue itself I would try to go for something with as warm an undertone as possible.. same with any whites you choose. If they have blue or grey undertones they will feel a look more drab with the specific light that's hitting them. It sounds like you're going to have a fab space! :)

I think you could go much bolder. That beautiful fireplace is bold! I’m mad about green and recently used Farrow & Ball Cromarty in my sitting room, but I think you could go even bolder with Mizzle or even Pigeon? I would paint the panels the same colour as the wall and keep the colour below the picture rail, above it white or at least a pale shade, but there are no hard and fast rules. To be honest any bold F&B paint would look good - despite the name Dead Salmon is a beautiful soft pink that would look great. The last pic is mine in Cromarty. You have such a lovely room!

I’m not sure about black doors, but then I’m very traditional in my tastes! Have a look at photos on Houzz (search for hallways) or on Pinterest which May give you some ideas.

Here’s some mid century hallways I found with mostly white walls. Doors all seem to be natural wood in a teak colour which was the thing back in the 70s. Of course you don’t have to be a slave to mid century style but it does look rather stylish. In the last pic they’ve painted the door a dark blue and it does look rather good. What design are your doors, I can’t quite see them?
