Choice of paint brand

My interior stylist is pushing for Benjamin Moore & Anne Sloan.

My renovator who is doing the actual on the ground work is more comfortable with Nippon & Dulux. Plus these are cheaper.

I am confused and would like to understand if there is a significant difference between the first 2 brands and Nippon/ Dulux

I use Dulux paints. Dulux trade paints are good quality without designer prices.

There are big differences in paint quality. The high end paints, F&B, Paint & Paper library, Little Green and Mylands all have a greater amount of pigment included hence being much more expensive. I have painted with most of the high end and lower range ones and find the colours of the more expensive paints to be very true to the samples and generally require less coats as well as being thicker to apply. You definitely get what you pay for. I have also used Dulux pure brilliant white builder grade when required so it depends on your budget and requirements. I don't listen to the F&B haters as I paint myself and can see and feel the quailty difference. Try Coat and Lick too, a couple of new players but still priced on the higher end of the scale. I have only used Annie Sloan chalk paint to wreck old furniture and Benjamin Moore has amazing colours and good reviews.

I would paint all the walls a soft buttery yellow - Restoration Hardware's Butter would be perfect. New window covering in the alcove could be a roman-style roll-up blind (you can find good inexpensive ones at K-Mart) that would pick up the tones from the wood floors and shutters. Art with red, gray and yellow matting hung in a grouping over the fireplace would add a classy touch. Your current furniture needs to be re-arranged in an attractive, more intimate way. Turn red rug the long way in front of fireplace and place couches across from each other on either side of the rug. Store some of the red striped cushions. Attractive but too many. I have both, chic shadow in living room with sapphire salute on fire place wall. Ive used warm pewter in my bedroom with white and eau d nil accessories...Its not out of fashion, its just so many people have grey. But, there are so many shades its hard to choose.

Is it for your use - ie you are the tenant . Or is if for other to use - ie you are the landlord?? If for first - go for something not too big as you next home might be smaller. Chose a colour and style that either classic and won’t date that you’ll keep for years - or funky and up to the minute that’s cheaper and can be replaced when you tire if it. If you are the landlord, chose something that’s neutral colour and easy to clean -maybe with a second supplied set of covers, make sure these are easily available and inexpensive to replace for fresh tenants - think ikea !! Hope that helps ! :-)

Hiya, I would not put a dark color, or a similar color to the tiles, since it would create an overwhelming effect in the kitchen. Shades of grey would work great along with the wooden shelves as well. Lighter blue could do, but depending on the lighting shade you have in the kitchen, it could look like green (if light shades are yellowish). Neutral pale whites could do. (I would say check the colors and try to avoid the ones with yellow undertone). Thanks, M

We’ve been very pleased with the results from Dulux trade Heritage paint. Definitely go for the trade version though, from a Dulux Decorating Centre. They are superior to the Dulux from Homebase and the like. You could always get some testers of each to see what you prefer in terms of finish.

I’ve used Dulux Trade and I am very impressed. Lovely colours and you can get a tough version for busy areas like hallways. The more expensive paints I have used include F&B and Little Green. The colour choices are to my taste (soft and gentle and not so “bright”) and they cover well. I used F&B Oval Room Blue to cover a navy wall and it did this in two coats so not a thin paint as some people (usually decorators!) claim. I’m not sure about Annie Sloan except that I hated her chalk paints. I’m not familiar with Nippon paints. Don’t be bullied into using paints you don’t want to use. I buy my own and the decorator has to use it, no question!

I’ve tried most of them and my preference is for Johnstones. Goes on well and doesn’t create that horrid dry line if you try to touch up at a later date. They have the advantage of an excellent colour match machine too.

Thanks everyone. I am in Singapore where the choice of brands is extremely limited .
I checked with Dulux - the trade version isn’t available.
The only 2 premium brands are Benjamin Moore & Anne Sloan (chalk paint) but their price is about 3 times that of Dulux

I thought you might be in Singapore as I googled Nippon paints and we defininitely do not have them here in the UK. I would go with Benjamin Moore for the great colour selection but as you say its a lot more expensive. You could always mix it up a little. BM for the main areas and Dulux for where it is not so noticeable. Entirely your choice. I have no experience of painting walls with Annie Sloan.

Hey Moushumi, you could always colour match, however there are a few contingencies with colour match that I always say to my clients. Don't use a machine that is less that 97% accurate (good companies will know this), the second is always ask them to re-calibrate the machine before you get your paint mixed and the final one - is get samples! If the company are good then they will colour match a sample for you and then you can take it home and test in your own home to see if it works against the original! Good luck renovating!
